Default Vulcan 900 Custom H.I.D. Lamp Kit Install How To.

Hey everyone. Today I got up early on a Sunday morning, earlier than anyone every should on a Sunday morning, and decided to install the H.I.D. Kit i've had lying around for a few weeks, The kit is a H4 bulb specific kit, its made to be plug and play. Anywho, I thought some may be interested in knowing how its done, so I created a how to write up... Here goes....

Well the kit I bought was made for a motorcycle obviously, but more so for a sport bike. There is no way the balast, wiring, transformer, and connections would fit in the headlamp bucket, so i start off by cutting the connectors in order to extend them...

I cut about 4 feet of bulk wire, 14 gauge, and laid it out, ready to solder it all together and extend the whole harness...

After soldering all the connections together, i shrink wrapped it in clear wrap to prevent any water entry. This step is optional i would say because the chances of water getting to the connections after the install is completed will be very unlikely...

After that step, wrapped all the connections in electrical tape to secure all the connections nice and tight...

And after all the connections are done, wrapped and taped, this was the end wiring product... And that cylinder at the end is the bulb. That was its protective casing

Next, pulled the two philips screws from the headlamp housing, and remove the headlamp, unplug the bulb, and remove it. Then plug in the H.I.D. H4 connector into the factory connector in the headlamp, and route the whole harness out the hole in the back of the housing.....

Next wrap the wires coming out of the headlamp in wiring harness tubing to make it nice and clean looking and route it towards the back.... (I know you guys love my killer key chain...)

Following the previous step, remove the seat, tool cover and tools, and remove the upper battery covers two philips screws. Move the bikes harness slightly out of the way and pull the upper battery cover all the way out. That big empty space behind the battery is where i decided to mount the ballast and wiring.....

The ballast is mounted to the frame in front of the rear fender and the wiring was tucked in there as well...

After the wiring and ballast was mounted, the tray and tools were reinstalled, and the outcome was very clean. The wiring is hardly visible...

(sorry guys i had to continue with a new reply post, it would only allow 10 images.)

The wiring from the headlamp to the rear was tucked underneath the tank...

And finally, after about an hour and a half of working time I was done. And that was while taking pictures and everthing. So im sure it can be accomplished in about an hour. And the end result is awesome. The bulb fits great and so did all the wiring and this was the great outcome....

So what does everyone think? I think its a great little mod that takes little time and the outcome is awesome. Greater visibility, nice front end change, and now Ill be more noticable to traffic. So thanks everyone for reading through and hope this helps someone. If anyone has any questions what so ever, email me or PM and ill help the best I can...

Oh and another thing, I also debaffled my stock pipes this weekend with the help of another write up on here and they sound great. I wanted to thank Trashman900c for supplying a spare set of factory pipes and for coming over and lending a hand to get it done!! Thanks Robb!

Looks really good. Nice write up. I like the bright light it gives off, was surprised to see how bright it is in the daylight.

I have thought of switching to an HID light on my vn900 classic but I want my lightbar to match the headlight (color-temperature wise). There is no f--king way I will add 3 HIDs with the 3 ballasts!

You could get one H.I.D. kit and use those "blue" looking bulbs. Im sure it will look close enough to where it looks good!

Yeah, I love the life expectancy on HIDs. I upgraded the headlights on my cage about 2 yrs ago and those HIDs are still going strong. Just gotta make sure you don't touch and leave oil on the bulbs and you are set for a while.

No. Most of these kits are low beam only, but with the extreme light output you get out of the low beam who needs high beams? You can order a kit that comes with HI/LO beams still, but I honestly think you will not need it.

QUOTE form website:
The H4/9003 Bi-Xenon bulbs in the bi-xenon kit stay fixed and there is a shield that covers and uncovers the capsule of the xenon bulb as you switch from low to high beam, thus changing the beam pattern. The high beam gives an upward projection and the low beam gives a forward projection. You will maintain the same beam pattern with dramatic increase in intensity and distance.

I am sorry but there is something I don't understand. Why do you have to run wires all the way back to the battery if there is power there at the bucket? I thought the direct conversion ones just plugged into the bucket plug.

Thanks.

Indeed, but in this case we are trying to hide the ballast and it will not fit into the headlamp bucket.

Thanks, Sergio... (Weird, thats my name also).

So it is not required, just a cleaner install / hide the ballast thing. Very cool!

This and a seat are my first planned upgrades.

You might wanna check out the Kawi gel seat. That is a nice upgrade and it will keep your butt and wallet happy. In other words, you won't have to shell out 700 bones for a new seat.

Thanks it is pretty straight forward. And to the post asking why I would run wires to the battery; i didn't run wires to the battery, its just that the ballast doesn't fit in the headlamp bucket, so i extended the BALLAST wiring to under the seat to hide it
