Default 06 vulcan 1600 classic/ VH Big shots question

I got my pipes and am having trouble waiting to put them on. Do I have to wait to have the power commander or can I put on the pipes for a few months without it? I do not want to damage the bike by running too rich or lean. I was also curious if just adding a k & N air filter will help much? Thanks.

If you are running the stock intake, the pipes alone are fine, just listen for signs of pinging.
The K&N stock replacement will do nothing to improve flow.
