If riding out, I'd like to spend more than 4 days getting to RL. With 2 weeks and 3 weekends, we could leave on Saturday, arrive at RL on Friday. Leave RL on Sunday, home by next Saturday. Time to see stuff, not just crank out miles.
I've done 500 mile days, but I'm not sure I could do 4 of them back to back. If you plan on taking more time and something happens, there's always a chance on making up the distance. Planning more mileage each day reduces your options.

Another option is to fly out west and rent a KLR650 from AmericanEagle (either one way or local return).

I'd like to plan on WVa and let some NE folks plan a nice NE ride.

I agree, I would like to have time to see the sites but 2 weeks is probably all I will be able to get off.

When you put it like that Mike, 2 weeks seems much more doable. I'm not too interested in flying/renting as I really want to ride out.

That does seem doable in 2 weeks without killing ourselves. Definitely want to go to Yellowstone and ride Beartooth highway.

I hope you guys know what you're getting into. Those are absolutely marathon rides each day. It will make our Erie and NY rides look like a jaunt downtown. I did 600 miles in 1 day, 2 times so far from Myrtle beach to Carlisle. Those took me 11-12 hours of solid riding with only gas breaks and a lunch stop. Adding another day and doing each way in 5 days would be much more bearable. Unless, of course, you want to do an iSpeed trip out and back!!

I'm thinking more like 6-1/2 days each way.

Probably more like 2 weeks to get out there and 2 weeks to get back I'm just sayin I'm in for whatever we decide. If you really think about it, I think we can get out there in 1 day, on a V2K

Maybe we should start a new thread for East Coast riders thinking about going to RL in 2010?

Why don't we leave on Saturday and plan to get there on Thursday early evening. That is 6 days to get there. Stay in Red Lodge on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to see more of the area. Leave early on Monday and arrive home on Saturday evening.

Just don't know if I will leave on a Sat July 3rd and spend July 4th on the road or if I will just leave on July 5th. 4 days is doable to get out there if we take the slab but may need to factor in an extra day in case of bad weather or unexpected problems.

Any thoughts on this?
2000 miles in 4 days is easily doable, but remember that it is tough to cover mileage with a group. no matter what, there is a lot of time lost to talking, more people getting fuel, more people needing time to eat, etc. just food for thought.

you've got the right plan in motion Mike. with two weeks you actually get a bit more and that is plenty of time to do this trip and do it comfortably. i can make the trek in 3 days each way, but that is no fun. taking 5 to 6 days for each part is the way to go.
i have also thought about flying out and renting, just to save time. probably won't though, as i would miss out on seeing my friends in the middle of the country.

when i do my trip, i usually spend anywhere from 16 to 22 hours on the road any given day. BUT, the difference is that i am by myself and only on the road to make time. when i stop for the night, i have nobody to hang out with and enjoy the time, so i don't bother stopping early unless i can't physically go any further. i ride til i can't or til the mileage works for what i need to cover. then i stop, eat, clean up, and go to sleep. usually try to be back on the road by 6am to take advantage of the daylight.

That's the way I go to visit family in Upstate NY. It's a wonderful ride. I could get to where I want to go in about 4 hours or so taking 84 and 17 most of the way, but I'd rather take 5 1/2 and do the route I actually take.

It also cuts off one fuel stop since my bike drops from 60MPG to around 45MPG on the slabs.

That's a doable compromise for most people - quicker than a few would like, but a little more relaxed than some might do on their own.

You're probably not going to get a full night's sleep on Saturday night with all the goings-on, so leaving Monday Morning would be better than Sunday.

Also, planning to get out their Thursday evening gives you a buffer to take part of Friday to finish the trip if something causes a delay.

Likewise, a delay headed home still gives you that Sunday for buffer at the back end if you leave Monday morning and plan to roll in sometime Saturday.

So, you get the potential for 7 days, with the goal of 6 each way.
