That route looks good to me as well....I did one last summer up that way that took in the "Diamondback" (The Diamondback Motorcycle & Sportscar Route) but it would be about 150 mile loop from Johnson City. Think the one you've got would be better and could be done at a more leisurely pace.

Don't lump that old guy Ken with me- he's still employed! I'm the one who's become a drain on the John Q. Taxpayer. The wife and I have been working on finding openings, sending out apps, emailing resumes, etc. but it's only been a week. And as an added bonus I'm getting lots and lots of much desired yard work done.
I actually got my first rejection email Friday. The lady was very nice, stating the position had been filled but recommended sending my app/resume to another division 30 miles up the road b/c there might be an opening there.
And thanks for the thoughts Martin. We're sure everything will work out for the best.

I am having a really tough time planning a ride. Especially with finding a lunch spot. I think I am just burnt out from planning rides over the years. I hope someone else can step up and plan the Saturday route.

I just received a reminder from the Red Roof Inn that our block of rooms will be released to the public on 6/26.

It's looking less and less like I'm going to be able to go this year. There's been some interest in the job market, in fact I have an interview tomorrow, but I'm not optimistic about getting the time off if I do get a job between now and then. For now I'll stay on the 'maybe' list but I've pretty much given up on the idea of attending.
So someone step up and take charge of the Friday ride. The route is already laid out and the lunch spot chosen. C'mon folks, someone's gotta do it.

Casual pace is fine with me for the Friday ride. I don't mind trying to come up with a Saturday ride if nobody else wants to. Just need to know a suitable mileage range and if there's any place in particular anyone would like to see...(ie, "The Snake, The Diamondback, etc). I'm definitely not a whiz with the map thingie but can probably get one up between now and then.

This place has some pretty good reviews if anybody is interested in a southernly route for Saturday. Could mix in Tn395/NC197 out of Erwin Tn, NC 80 down to BRP back up to Little Switzerland. After lunch could take 226 down to 226A and take the 226A loop back up Spruce Pine, then NC19 over to NC80 north back to NC226/Tn107 on into Unicoi, Tn and back to Johnson City. Route would be around 160 miles.

Ok ladies and germs, I know I created a problem with the planning and such when I became unemployed. But yesterday I got a job offer I've decided to take. It's a good opportunity with good pay and significantly different from what I've done for the last 20+ yrs. Today we work out the details and sometime next week I go to work.
So for me the Dragon's Tail is out, sorry. And the Friday ride is out. That I'm really sorry about, I was really looking forward to that. But right now the plan is to ride to J'City Friday evening and say howdy to everyone and enjoy Saturday and ride home Sunday.
Wish me luck!

Congratulations on the new job offer!
I'm afraid a little birdie told me *whistle, whistle*that Chaz and Cheri are having a few issues that may hinder the trip for them too.
July has been cursed in their world! They are taking Cheri's mother to Key West in July. She has never been and really wants to go. She's 80 years old and walking is getting harder and harder for her.....so they want to be sure and take her this year while she can still get around. It was planned for the days BEFORE this BTK ride. Then she got summoned to court on one of those days and the State's Attorney would not let her out of it! (Some thugs tried to break into her house and they were caught...she is the state's witness against them). So, they moved the vacation around to AFTER the BTK ride. Everything was set and hotels were booked for Chaz and Cheri for both trips.
Then, as their luck as been running for the month of July.....Chaz just found out his boss will be out of town the week of this BTK trip and he has Chaz filling in for him
Chaz tried and tried to find someone else that could do it, but he's it!
So....they can't do the Dragon, or meet up with everybody earlier in the week. Their plan, is to try and do what Russ is talking about.....make a beeline there Friday after work and at least have Saturday to see everybody before everyone heads back home on Sunday. It depends on the distance and amount of time it will take to get there from their home.....
