This is the route I had worked on. Can't figure out any other way to post it. But check it out and see if it will work. Runs around 152 miles and could have lunch at the Mountain View Restaurant outside of Little Switzerland.

Still not exactly right...the first leg from Johnson City to Erwin, I planned to just take I-26 down and hit 395. On the return, I figured to just take Unicoi Drive off of 107. Don't know how I mixed it up...

Let us know when you get it finalized so we can have Mike get it up on the server.

I hear the Tail of the Dragon is really pretty congested most of the time. That the leo's are very present (30 mph), car clubs, posers etc..., not to mention photogs and video present as well. Since I have never been there, I have to ride it at least once or I think I would have skipped it. Does anyone have first hand experience riding it? I hear the locals go nowhere near it but ride elsewhere, uncongested.

I haven't been there, which is why I originally planned to ride it the day before the official ride. If I'm going to be that far south I can't skip it.

From everything I have heard its pretty decent during the weekdays, weekends its a mess.

So, I've done the mods to the routes. I split them up into 3 different ones for ease of tracking. Part one is about 120 miles/2.75 hrs (actual saddle time); part 2 is only about 22 miles, and part 3 is about 75 miles/2 hrs.

Mike, can we delete the originals and I'll email the modded ones so folks can download them? I have them saved in both .gdb and .gpx format.

Or if folks prefer, you can send me a PM and I'll send them directly to you. Be sure to include an email address and which file version you'd like.

Okay....think I've got it finalized. See if this will work.. I've got it on my Garmin and it looks right. Wound up being 174 miles when I added the lower end of NC 80. Sent an email to Mountain View just to make sure they can handle a few extras around lunch time.

I'm looking for someone to ride with Tuesday to Roanoke. I'll be getting on I-81 in Carlisle PA. Anyone else going that way?

Do you have any specific plans set for the trip down? I haven't decided whether to head south thru central VA and NC and return up I-81 corridor to DC area or do it the other way. I'd prefer to ride Rt 340 or Rt 11 instead of I-81, at least most of the time. Were you thinking of riding the Dragon twice, once on Wednesday and again on Thursday? I've taken enough time off to allow for 3 days down and 4 back if I want to.

I don't have any specific plans yet. Looks like it's about 4.5 hours from my house to Roanoke (where several of us are spending the night), all but 20 minutes would be on I-81. . As far as riding that Dragon twice, I guess I'll wait and see what everyone else wants to do.

She didn't forsee any problems unless they were extremely busy that day.....and that would only be a problem in that we might not all be able to sit together. I told her I would try to touch base with them either the night before or the morning of and I'd have a better idea of how many and what time frame we would be looking at and we might be able to reserve the porch area. Just keeping fingers crossed for good weather now!

There's also a nice interactive map (>2012-ride.html<) and a Google Earth kml file (>2012-ride.kml<, right-click and save) that anyone can use to check out the routes. The same directory link is in message #1 of this thread.

The routes were created using Garmin Mapsource 6.16.3 and City Navigator North America NT 2013.1 maps. HTML map and Google Earth KML files were created using >www.gpsvisualizer.com<.

I also posted just the recreated Friday routes at the same place.

I added additional intersection points to keep the routes on track (I originally got a few differences when recomputing routes compared to Russ' gpx files), changed the route names to include Day and Number prefixes (for example, S1:, S2:, and S3: for Saturday routes) and have the routes use the "Destination from Source" naming format which makes the Zumos use 2 lines to display the route name instead of truncating it. I added common waypoints for motels, lunch, and Grandfather Mountain destinations, and I've added an important waypoint ("favorite") for Johnson City -- North Side Package Store of Johnson City which is about 1/4 mile from Red Roof Inn.

I've checked the routes and they seem to line up exactly with Russ' and Charles' planned routes, but please feel free to give them a look and PM or email me with any discrepencies or desired changes.
