Thus far, we have a tentative ride planned for the holiday weekend. The plan is an overnight stay wherever we see fit. We will be leaving Saturday the 5th, heading expressway to the Muskegon area then ride the scenic routes along Lake Michigan up to the Leelanau Peninsula, perhaps to the Grand Traverse lighthouse and down to Traverse City. The entire distance from our home area is roughly 400 miles. The idea is to travel the expressway to arrive there soon, then have more time to enjoy the scenic ride. We stay overnight in Traverse City then play it by ear from there. The overnight stay in Traverse is not set in stone and can change based on where we actually are, what looks good, moods, attitudes, etc. We can then head backroads home, or expressway depending on time, or take some time for another day elsewhere, but would most likely require another stay over somewhere.
The only thing stopping me from this trip is weather and/or finances, which are smacking me upside the head a bit right now. If the weather forecast looks bad in those areas for the weekend, I'm most likely out, Let's face it, most cannot enjoy a nice scenic ride if it's in the rain, at least not me. It makes for a miserable time, for the most part. Therefore, anyone else is welcome to join and hope we can make it a fun time.

GO WEST
I have the go ahead from my wife so I'm making it official. I'll be headed to the Black Hills and possibly to Beartooth Pass pending time and weather. We'll be going on the Sept 5th ride with Meanie and Fishman up to Travers City. Then on Sunday we'll head up the coast and go through the Tunnel of Trees on 119, head for the bridge. Then it's west on hwy 2 to WI. The plan is to return on Sept 15th. Is anyone interested? If you are, post soon. We would like to split the hotel room as much as possible, that's cheaper for everyone. Change of plans we will be leaving the ride on Saturday and heading for 119. Hope to cross the bridge and get down 2 a ways. The next morning we're headed straight for Beartooth. I just talked to Beartooth Kawasaki and they said the pass is open from 8am to 8pm.
Google map puts the ride a little over two hours difference from Rapid City so it makes more sence to go there first and work our way back. I'll be taking my laptop with me, so I'll keep you posted. Last edited by STEVE PAUL : 09-04-2009 at 03:55 PM. |

On a side note, Steve called me as we were headed home. They were passed the bridge but I didn't quite hear what city/town they were in but not far from the Wisconsin border. He called while they were having breakfast and everything is A-OK so far. I told him to keep calling with updates. While we were on M-10 I was thinking of taking advantage of a few back roads and programmed it to the GPS. Then as we passed through that section with trees on each side, I felt the cold quickly hit and thought the back roads would be the same if not worse. Next time.

No, we didn't take a dip, to cold but looked good. Those are the Grand Tetions in the background. We are in the Black Hills now and guys we got to plan a ride out here it's some of the best riding I've ever done and beautiful to boot. Lots of twisties, switch backs, tunnels, pigtails and mountians.
Tomarrow we start for the Bad Lands and home. See you guy soon. |

Sunday, October 4th, there are two ride-in bike shows scheduled. I have some people going..to Holly, MI. Show starts @ 9:30 and runs until 4:00.
then we head to Plymouth.. Plymouth, MI. Show starts and 12:00 noon and runs until 4:00. Both shows are benefits. The Plymouth show is a chili cook-off as well. Plan is to hit Holly around 9:30-10:00, stay for a couple of hours, then make the ride down to Plymouth for some chili and the other show. Anyone interested?

Also, one of the officers here at work is scheduling a ride on the 11th. He lives in Tecumseh and wants to plan a ride to Hudson Leather, then back to his home for BBQ (burgers and dogs and drinks). If anyone is interested in that, he would like to get a count to who's attending.

Oh crap, it is a Sunday. Why was I thinking Saturday? I may have to forget that one. Have to see if Mom still wants to meet for brunch.
