What's fuel availability like inside the park?

Since my club is doing Zion in May, I'm probably going to cough up the $80 for the annual pass... and one pass is good for 2 bikes/4 people.

+1

The biggest mistake that people make when planning an Ironbutt ride is to leave at 2am, thinking that they will get most of the night riding done while they are "fresh", and it'll be warm sunny afternoon by the time fatigue starts hitting them.

Problem is, that means that they would have to go to bed at 5-6pm the night before... very poor sleep, then getting up at 1 they won't be hungry for breakfast so probably won't hydrate or properly "fuel" themselves.

Their bodies "crash" at 12-15 hours.... just the time that the ride really "begins"... and now it's starting to get dark.

The only thing that I would suggest is if people going are not used to getting up before 8, that we gradually adjust our schedules so we are getting to bed before 10 and getting up around 5 for at least 2 weeks straight prior to the trip.

Remember... we'll be going through a time zone, so by the time we get into Idaho/Montana 10 to 5 will feel like 9 to 4... we'll be short an hour going into the 3rd day, so acclimating ourselves to 10-5 here will set us up for 11-6 there without adjustment.

My schedule is so whacked I don't know why I bother to set an alarm.

Today I was up at 7.
Yesterday up at 8.
Wednesday up at 10 (was working until 2am)
Tuesday up at 5:30
Monday up at 6

Next Monday I'll be able to get up at 9 if I want to... job site is 1/2 hour away and I don't need to be there until 10.

Talking Trip to Bishop

I rode up to Bishop thursday night with a buddy. We spent the night in June Lake and we had a blast. Friday morning we kinda wanted to see Bodie, since I've never been there. Now, I had heard the roads to Bodie are closed for the winter but we still chose to go. Wrong idea. Road 270 closed due to ice. On the way back we took hwy 395 all the way to the 15 south. We tried to avoid all the traffic on the 14S and the 5S. Not a bad ride over all, except that the 395 is windy as hell where it meets the 58. We tried to cross Yosemite on the 120 but once again, it was pretty icy. We stopped often for fuel since we are not familiar with fueling stations and how far apart they are. We promised to go back in the summer and make it to Bodie all the way. We got real close this time, we had 10 miles left ahead of us when the ice sent us home crying. Nice experience. Just thought to let you guys know.

Awesome. Wind is pretty bad this time of year. It should be calm in July.

If you do get to Bodie before we leave in July, be sure to report on road conditions. My GPS software LOOKS like there's a few miles of dirt road, but it also shows some other roads that I know are paved with the same legend.

How'd that seat treat your butt?

The roads to Bodie are all paved, except the last ten miles or so. I had to go slow but it was still accessible. The seat was ok. No discomfort. I was always told I have a hard head but I guess my butt is harder

half the road to bodie is dirt, but it's a good even road and easily done on a bike.

Rich, I love you man and you're usually right about everything so when I find an error, I just have to point it out. No doubt Beartooth is excitingly beautiful and intimidating but it's 10,974 asl.

I've been over two that are higher.

and there are a couple of more in Colorado that are higher.

A little about Yellowstone too. We left Colter Bay just a little after daylight, maybe 5:30, went the Geyser Basin, Tower Junction route through and didn't get into RL until about 5:00 pm. Granted, we stopped for an hour to see Old Faithful but the traffic after mid-morning was pretty horrible
