My wife and I are seriously considering it...what kind of ride we talking about (how many days/miles etc). Do the socal folks rough it or hotel it enroute...whats typical and what should we expect? I saw an earlier post abt leaving mid week and a 3 day ride?

Rich is better on the details than me.........for anyone riding with us from socal, we sould probably have a ride meeting a few weeks out. When by myself, I just crash at rest stops, with a group, I have no idea, Rich is mor elike me, anywhere I can lay down is good, cant tell you how many picnic benches I have slept on. not sure about art............personally, I will go either way, but some hotel time would be nice. I believe we are talking on going up to LA tuesday afternoon, shipping out wednesday to reno, then somewhere in Utah, and friday early hit montana and the mountain, and taking it easy on the way back, I opened my vacation time another day also it has been about 20 years since I did a trip like this

Utah? Why would we go south from Reno?
Here's my map and projected routes: http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day1.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day2.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day3.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day6.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day7.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/day8.jpg ![]() Depending on how we feel, we could push two 600 mile days and get home in 2 days, but I wanted to allow for the fact that we'll have been on the road for over a week and MIGHT not be up to pulling a couple of long days back to back. Not shown on the above list is what's really day 1... a short hop Tuesday evening up to Art's place near Frazier Park.... about 120 miles for me from Chino.

Do some "local" long rides to make sure you're up for a 650 mile day! A trip out to Mitchell Caverns and back is a little over 400 miles and a long enough trip to get the feel for what you can tolerate.

Pretty limited on the 900 selection. The Kawi gel seat is pretty popular and is cheaper than the Mustang, plus the pillion is WAY wide for a happy passenger.
Mustang, I think you're limited to the vintage touring seat (with or without studs) and what they call the "daytripper"... but I don't think the Daytripper would look as nice on your LT, and it looks to be pretty narrow... probably not too good for long rides. Seems to be more of a barhopper seat (but still better than stock). If you like studs but not conchos.... Decorate Your Seat! I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading the seat. We're looking at 2600 miles over 6 days PLUS a day or two of riding while in RedLodge. Most people complain about the stock seat (particularly the 900) after as little as 200 miles or so. I didn't have a problem with the stock seat on my 1600, but the Mustang is WAY nicer... and the stocker was not enough for my wife for even 100 miles. Done multiple 400 mile days with her and she does just fine.

Rich,
Thanks for the info. Your suggestion of trying a 400 mile + day is a good one. We will definitely do that. So 1st day is actually a ride to stay near Frazier Park (wherever that is...) on Thur PM? I'll google that and Mitchell Caverns. So whats the ride weather typically like at this time of year on that route? Must get a bit warm heading to Reno..... Bill |

Frazier Park is just off of I-5 up north of Hungry Valley near the 138 Junction. Quote:
If you don't have to take a leak at every fuel stop, or at least every other stop, you aren't drinking enough water in that kind of heat. You can get away with that for a day, maybe two, but it'll catch up with you.

dont forget the sunblock..........it will be a real long ride if you are burned red the first day
wow...........looks like we might have a group ride going on. If we do get this big, I still would think maybe a ride meeting a few weeks out, just to go over things people might forget and to go over the route, exchange emergency info, that kinda good stuff. I'll be bringing a pretty full med kit with me

Called the Alpine Lodge - completely sold out, we are on the wait list. Going to take Rich's advice and ride to Mitchell Cavern's this Saturday. Might as well start "conditioning" early!
