I am wondering if that was a staged accident for insurance purposes

Okay.... working on the routing and nightly stops.

Day 1
Our first night will be in Tropic Utah. It's a total of about 550 miles, late check-in (going to shoot for an early dinner at the Buffalo Bistro in Glendale with another hour on the road to Tropic).
Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic
Looks like about 10 places to stay... though a couple are B&Bs.
Worst case, there's a KOA in Cannonville 5 miles down the road.

IF we aren't up for the last 60 miles to Tropic, we can probably get a few rooms with 2 beds at the Thunderbird Best Western in Mt Carmel, but I'm not sure how their bookings are that week, and it's the only place to stay at that junction (the AAA rate is close to $100, and the service at the cafe is horrible)

Continued.....

Day 2

Two potentials for the overnighter.... Logan Utah, or Pocatello Idaho.
There's 111 miles between the two, so whether we spend the first night in Mt Carmel or Tropic may make the difference how far we get on day 2.
Also, this is running about 530 miles on day 2. Keeping in mind that the loop up Burr Trail is slow going, I think Logan might be a better place to stop for the night (about 420 miles for the day)... again, we'll see how we feel when we get there. Lodging is plentiful in either location.

Okay....

Day 1 - 554 miles, including a trip through Zion ($12 for a bike).
Day 2 - 542 to Pocatello Idaho. The day begins with a BEAUTIFUL ride along Devil's Backbone and up Burr Trail to the end of the paved road at the west gate to Capitol Reef National Park. We'll make a u-turn there and come back down the trail and reconnect with the "A Journey Through Time Byway" (Hwy 12) and continue north into Spanish Fork where we'll return to the superslab.
Day 3 - 395 miles from Pocatello to Red Lodge.

Our longest leg for fuel will be 128 miles, BUT we can stop and let Mark top off before we head up Burr Trail. We'll all refuel at the same station when we get back down the hill before we continue north.
Next longest leg is 116 miles from West Yellowstone to Livingston Montana.

We'll have a couple of short (55-65 mile) legs, but they are backed up against 104 to 128 mile legs, so it's probably not wise for the bikes with bigger tanks to skip them.

I'll work on the return trip later... but I do want to try to take the northern route and come down through the Sierras on the way home, rather than just do an "out and back".

remember, I have a entertainment.com card, sometimes it works out better, if someone has a triple A or other discount card, if you could check your rates also

I agree with you with the trail thing, and just doing logan might be better, plus, we will be coming off day 1 which is always the toughie for things to not always go as planned

Sounds like a plan.
We'll come down the hill down 330 instead of 138, that'll put us 15 miles closer.
