does he have any experience? if not, it's not a good idea. the ride to red lodge is a 1500 mile grind. the idea he wants to ride is great, but let him get some time in before he tries a ride of this distance.

Been thinking (I know, that's dangerous) about Art's comment about Yellowstone.

What does everyone think about leaving a day early (Tuesday morning) and getting into Jackson Hole Wednesday night. That'll give us the entire day Thursday and even Friday morning to tour the Yellowstone area, maybe even squeeze in Devil's Tower?

To keep everyone from having to take Monday off, I was thinking that we could skip the party at Art's the night before we leave and all meet up at the Coso Junction where the 14 and 395 come together.

That'll also give us an extra day in case we can't make the 700 mile grinder from Lobo's place to Jackson Hole on Wednesday.

I'll get to work on plotting some alternate routes this week so Mark can work on lodging and I can work on fuel stops.

Rather than try for the 75/150 mile fuel stops, I think I'm just going to shoot for 120... doesn't seem like we'll have anyone with us with a range shorter than 120, and depending on speeds and terrain, 150 can be pushing it for the 1600's and V2Ks.

Nope.... Devil's Tower is a no-go for the trip up.
I thought it was closer to Yellowstone, but it's over 400 miles from Old Faithful.

I'll look into hitting it on the way home.

ALSO.... for the trip up, I think the extra day is a smart idea, as the last 100 miles or so heading into Jackson looks like a pretty "good" road... meaning twisties. Maybe not the safest at the end of a 700+ mile day.

I'm going to do two different routes up... one grinding from Carson City to Jackson, and a second one stopping short of Wyoming. If we get an early enough start Friday we can still tour Yellowstone.

Okay.... first tentative with fuel stops:

Day 1:
BeachBlvd (Buena Park) to FourCorners (Kramer Station) 114 mi 2:01:39
I-15 to Hwy 395
FourCoorners to LonePine 121 mi 2:42:04
Continue on 395
LonePine to LeeVining 122 mi 2:50:01
Continue on 395
LeeVining to Gardnerville 116 mi 2:43:03
Continue on 395 with detour to Bodie
Gardnerville to Carson City 16 mi 0:20:39
Continue on 395

Total Day 1 499 mi 10:37:26

Day 2:
Carson City to Lovelock 109 mi 2:00:23
Hwy 50 to Silver Springs, turn north on US95-Alt to I-80
Lovelock to Battle Mountain 126 mi 1:54:53
Continue on I-80
Battle Mountain to Wells 122 mi 1:51:17
Continue on I-80 to US-93
Wells to Twin Falls 114 mi 2:29:09
Continue on US-93 to I-84
Twin Falls to Pocatello 113 mi 1:49:02
I-84 to I-86 to I-15
Pocatello to Victor 112 mi 2:09:14
I-15 to US26 (Idaho Falls junction)
Victor to Jackson 24 mi 0:32:14
US26 to ID-31 (scenic) to Hwy 33/22 to US191
Total Day 2 720 mi 12:46:12

Day 3:
Jackson to Old Faithful 97.7 mi 2:10:22
US191 to US287 into Yellowstone Park
OldFaithful to Fishing Bridge 103 mi 2:15:31
Grand Loop to Mammoth, through Tower Junction, south to Lake
Fishing Bridge to Red Lodge 131 mi 2:51:54
Backtrack on Grand Loop to Tower Junction, Exit on Northeast Entrance Road to US212, US212 to Red Lodge

Total Day 3 332 mi 7:17:47

Keep in mind that day 3 is highly tentative. It's a 68 mile, 1.5 hour double back of twisties from Tower Junction to Fishing Bridge and back. I need to look at park features and see if there is anything to see on the east side of the park, or if we would be better off eliminating that.
Also, fuel availability in the park could be an issue.

looks good to me...............I'll start checking lodging. I would still rather meet at arts if possible monday night. Just because with a 480 mile day tor eno, yeah its a short ride, but would rather have everyone possible in one place to leave together

Just in case, look into alternate lodging anywhere between Twin Falls and Idaho Falls. Jackson would be nice and make for an easier ride into RL, but I would prefer to be "fresh" on that ride into Jackson... though the last leg into RL out of Yellowstone includes Beartooth Pass... the highest highway pass in the US at 11,000ft... and it's twisty!

Hmm... that wouldn't be a bad spot for the shot of everyone taking a leak at the side of the road.... half the group on either side of the Continental Divide

okay......checked idaho falls and twin falls..........plenty open for 2 queen beds for $60 to $70 a night, so split between two people is pretty cheap. These are the more basic hotels, but teh pics look good.

there are also the $100 a night places, but my attitude is warm shower, and a place to lay my head...........I'm good.

found open reservations in red lodge within a few minutes of the alpine, they get a little pricier, but it is a vacation area, up to about $100 a night.

will bring the info to the next ride meeting.

other than those with wives, we can double up in rooms pretty easily

Sounds good... So splitting rooms, about $150 for the 3 nights in RL, plus another $150 or so for the rest of the week.

Bring earplugs

Ok guys, I did yellowstone last year on the way to and from Red Lodge. The west side is much more scenic than the east. Lots of dead burned stuff on the east side. Rooms are expensive in Jackson. We paid 110 a night in a Motel 6. Jackson to Red lodge is fairly easy if you don't spend too much time sight seeing. Plan for all day though, some of it is down to 20 mph in the park especially if it is crowded.

Also be ready for a 20 or 25 dollar charge to go through the tetons and yellowstone. It is good for 1 week so if you can, do like us , and do the west side on the way up and the east side on the way home.
