Hey Mean Dream are you doing any sightseeing on the way? I should be somewhere in SD by Monday night and I am going to spend Tuesday tooling around Custer state park and the black hills. Wednesday is going through NE WY and arriving in RL that evening.
I wanted to take an extra day going out this year to do a little more sight seeing in the black hills area. The last two years I just blasted thru there, always meaning to ride in the Black hills but never doing it. I'll be leaving early Monday, I'm going from Illinois to the Great River road from Dubuque Iowa up to Minnesota, then cut across Iowa on #9, instead of my usual route of #90 thru Minnesota. First night then is in Sioux Falls, SD. My second night will most likely be in the Black hills/Rapid city area, so I can ride around that area more. The third day will be a little more of that area in the A.M. then onto Buffalo/Sheridan Area for the night. Friday, is the short trip to into Red Lodge. Thats the general plan as of tonight anyway.

First day is the longest at 550 to 600 miles
Second day is shorter at about 350 miles
Third day is 210, plus sight seeing.
Fourth day is 210 into Red Lodge

That's a lot for us... I think our longest day is just under 400 mi.
How often does everyone stop? We are going to shoot for every 100 or so.. They don't have to be long ones but a quick bathroom break, stretch and some energy...

Did you guys hear, B.T. will be at Red Lodge this year. Not sure who is taking him or when he will arrive, but I hope you all take good care of him and get lots of pictures with him as well.

Dawn, our longest day will be 465 miles and we stop at 100/150 mile increments depending on fuel availability.

Well, I would rather it was a bit shorter than 600 the first day, I may stop sooner. I'm taking a longer, more scenic route that meanders along the Mississippi river a bit and I'm not familiar with hwy 9 thru Iowa. I'm leaving very early to try and allow for the slower road speeds, so we'll see how it goes. The one advantage to traveling alone is that you can do "whatever" without making things unpleasant for others.

Pretty funny about the donkey.

Dawn, we usually stop about every 125 or 130 miles. Alan could go a lot longer because he has a bigger gas tank, but I don't like to go past that many miles on my tank. Plus, like you say, it's nice to have a pee break, get off the bike and move around a bit, etc. But we like to keep our breaks pretty short--15 minutes max. Some friends visited us last year and I took them on rides every day. They stopped every hour so they could smoke, and then they stood around for at least half an hour at each stop. It drove me crazy!

Can't believe we'll be seeing everybody in just a week. Woo hoo!!!

Jul,

I want to keep our breaks short as well...it's just us two to Flagstaff, and on to Moab, so we shouldn't have a problem with that...I'm sure Brian and Marilyn are the same...quick stops...eat and go. Maybe a little longer for a lunch break, but otherwise...I'd like to be on the road...
