Anyone have any thoughts on either of these jackets? Or suggestions on other jackets? I'd like something lightweight but with some protection, and something that will look good with my Vulcan
Jacket 1 Jacket 2

How can you feel safe in a jacket that's not made with the intention of protecting you if you go down?
I urged all people to wear genuine, heavy leather ALL the time. If you think it's too hot, unzip your cuffss and the pull down the front zipper a bit and it'll vent nicely. |

fireman, I have a Joe Rocket Ballistic in red, black, and white that looked really sharp on my red Vulcan. Highly visible, decent protection (armor in lower back, shoulders, and elbows) and fairly inexpensive - found a mint condition used one on eBay for $75. Just a thought...

Yes, it would be nice if everyone could wear leather allllll the time. But let's face it - they won't. If all they have is leather, and they want to go riding on a hot summer day, they're not going to SKIP riding - they're going to end up skipping the jacket. Whereas if they have options as to what they can wear (leather for cool weather, mesh for warm), then they'l probably opt to wear their mesh. Much like the helmet debate, I'd much rather argue with someone about what brand of helmet they wear, so long as they WEAR one. With this, I'd much rather someone go out wearing SOME sort of armoured jacket than no jacket at all. Just my $0.02.

a little late to this one, but thanks to Nee for making those points ! i do love leather, but i am actually going to change back to textile for all of my riding gear. i see no downside to going to textile and i feel that it will protect me just as good as leather, if not a little bit better for impacts due to the armor. and that's my $0.02

Hey there... I've found gear at a variety of places... I DO like giving my business to local shops, but sometimes they just can't beat some of the deals you can find online. A couple of my faves are:
http://www.tricktape.com http://www.cyclegear.com As for pants, I think there's another thread in this section on the Armoured/reinforced jeans/pants (Icon, Draggin, Joe Rocket, etc....). Also, Icon makes armour you can strap on under 'regular' clothes (or as extra protection under Kevlar/reinforced pants) - they make a set of leg protectors, and also a chest/back protector. My boyfriend has the leg protectors, and loooooves them.

Fireman, I have the first jacket. I got it on sale, too. Woo hoo! It's really well made. My husband liked mine so much he went and bought himself one, too. The jacket provides a lot of protection--has good armour in the shoulders, elbows and back, plus extra heavy leather padding in all those places--but the mesh makes it really cool compared with my other jacket. Because we ride in the mountains so often, where it can a lot cooler than down here where we live, I carry a polar fleece jacket in my bags to put on under it in case it gets cool.

Fireman,
I've got a Firstgear Kilimanjaro Air. It's part mesh and cmoes witha removeable waterpoof liner, which is actually a pretty good weight for the elevaltions and temperature changes here. I"ve also got a full mesh Triumph, and have used a Northface fleece windbreaker for the colder temps. The Kilimnajaro has better storage than the Triumph.

Oh, I forgot. The Fieldsheer comes with a waterproof coat that goes over the jacket. It's in a little pouch on the bottom of the back. Really convenient.
