+1 for the recommendation for the SwissGear Pack.
I also have to recommend the one I use myself: Targus | TSB03201US – Targus 15.4” Feren Backpack - Olive Holds everything I need easily, lots of pockets, and insulated place to put my soda, and a little detachable holder for my cellphone. Very comfortable, with chest strap.

I'm on my second Swiss Gear pack that I picked up from my local Sam's Club. The first one I had for about a year, and it had the strap across the chest which I really liked. I used it for carrying school books and a laptop. They have tons of room and different compartments.
The second pack was slightly different than the first gen model I had, but it too came from Sams. It doesn't have the chest strap, but everything else is pretty much the same. For $40 this I thought was a great deal, especially considering how much I use them. |

The good thing about backpacks is that if you fill them up all the way, they make a great backrest.

I just bought a new Northface Recon last week too. My biggest problem with the bag I had was the heat. My back would start sweating and I would have to arch my shoulders back to get some airflow underneath. The Recon has mesh padding. I wore it riding around in the Louisiana heat all weekend and didn't have a problem at all. Plenty of pockets and straps, feels secure, and also has a pocket for a water bladder for the long rides. The whistle on my front clip doesn't work very well though

Adding a chest strap is pretty simple:
1. Use a length of line. Not pretty or elegent, but works. 2. Go to JoAnn Fabrics and get the clips and some webbing. Machinie sewing is neater, but this stuff can be hand sewn. When I day hiked a lot I'd look for clean backpacks at the thrift store and modify them. I've added chest straps, straps for sleeping pad/bedroll, etc.

Swiss Gear backpack. Best laptop bag I've ever owned. Compartments everywhere for almost every need. I don't usually wear mine as I ride though, I have a sissy bar, so I attach it the sissy bar with 2 strong bungee cords (not the cheap, stretch-a-lot-and-easily bungee cords). No issues.
