Default Helmet after impact

Long story short, I was thrown off my bike ( while going 40) and landed on my chin. Luckly my helmet took all of the impact. It was a full face modular helmet, and the impact forced the front of the helmet to flip open when I landed. However, I Can still close the helmet and it feels secure when I pull it with my hands.

My question is, how do I find out if the modular helmet suffered any real damage that has degraded its protection.

Any impact with the ground should warrent a new helmet as it may have suffered internal failures not seen on the outside. The next impact may cause it to shatter like an egg shell.

If in doubt, contact the helmet manufacturer for advise.

Not to be a wise guy, but at that speed I would not even try to find out if the helmet is damaged. I would assume it is and buy a new one.

You can send it back to the manufacturer for inspection and an all-clear, but it was designed to take ONE impact (with a head in it) and it'll probably come back "toast".
I'm not one to believe that a helmet needs to be replaced when it rolls off of the seat or falls off of the mirror, but when your head is in it, the foam is compressed and it does not rebound. The shell may look fine, but the protection is from the foam.

The rule of thumb for dirt riders is any impact hard enough to "ring your bell"... any (abnormal) ear ringing, momentary blackout, etc... indicates a minor concussion and the helmet should be replaced.

Replace it. How much is your head worth? How much is the helmet? Hmmmm.

Time for a new helmet. Plus after having the modular helmet open on you during the impact are you sure you still want a modular helmet?

Definitely replace it.

Actually, if your helmet even falls off of your seat 2 feet and hits the concrete - you need to send it off to have it inspected (if the manufacturer offers the service). But if you wrecked and hit the road with it, there's really no need for more discussion - replace it. Period.

That's the biggest reason I don't want a modular. One solid, immovable piece in front of my jaw, please.

I'm glad I read this thread! It's getting on time for a new helmet, and I was thinking about one of those trendy modular ones. Never occured to me that there could be a downside! I'll stick to one-piece, full-face, I think.

The viewports on the modular lids also tend to be a bit smaller.

Haven't watched it in several years... I try to avoid Comedy Central for the most part nowadays.

They used to have some great programming.... MST3K was a lot of fun, but it's just become more of the same... even 4 years ago we joked that it was "Rerun Central".
I can't count how many times I've both watched and changed channels away from the Amazing Jonathan... his show is like the house band at the local bar.
Can't stand Bill Maher.

Yup. helmet hits ground with head in it, replace. no debate, no question, replace it. is your health and life worth saving $2-300 and buying a quality full face lid? I mean I wouldnt, but then again I have 3 different helmets that I alternate between for just such a purpose.
