At a minimum, besides the helmet, a good motorcycle jacket, I wear a mesh one of ballistic nylon in the summer and leather in the winter, with proper pads; gloves; good sturdy boots with a "non slip" sole...I wear levi's all the time and they stood up to a 40 mph slide recently...

then of course there are other things based on environment...rain gear, sunglasses, reflective vest (req on mil bases). Just my $0.02

Boots, gloves and jacket here. Jacket doesn't need to be leather, textile will do if it has protection built in. Advantage there is that if it's mesh with a liner it will work for both cold and warm weather.

I have an Olympia jacket that's nylon and cordora. It has built in armor and a removable liner so it great on hot days and on cooler one I put in the liner.

Yeah, for a newbie, you might want to get a decent textile jacket first...they can do a bit of everything (rain, cold, hot...plus add armor in many cases at not a lot of money).

For me, I've got a leather jacket, gloves, jeans (have very warm textile pants for cold weather and looking into perforated leather riding pants when funds allow), and work boots (cheap, waterproof, comfortable, and they won't come off in a crash like tennis shoes will). To start, I'd recommend buying stuff that gets the job done...buy versatile gear...eventually you can get your summer gear, winter gear, rain gear, race gear, etc.
