My wife and I are going to take a trip, she in her car in me on my bike. I'm looking for a way for us to talk on our way to our destination. Any recommendations on what would work well?
Keep in mind 1) I wear a full-face helmet 2) Need something that will also block out the wind noise (I normally ride with earplugs) 3) We should always be within a mile or two of each other, so something that only works over short distances would be fine.. 4) Price is secondary to function; I'm willing to pay for something that does the job well. Thanks!

a couple of frs radio will fill the bill for 1 mile or less. Contrary to what any one says they just don't have the power for 5 or more miles. You can buy a helmet headseton ebay for this, and she can use it as a handheld or get a over the ear boom mic/earpiece. It is not studio quality audio but for a total investment of less than 100.00 it'll do fine. If you want me to source the proper components and link to you I can

Full face Headset;match set for Midland GTX radio These radios and headset are 100% legal, both to possess and use for your intended purpose. Don't be fooled by the range claims, I would believe maybe 2 miles under ideal conditions. If you don't like this setup, let me know I'll find you something else. Wife and I have tried about everything cheap on the market for bike to bike. We now have real ham radios on each bike and are licensed to operate these, but this is a very expensive way to go about it. Our radios cost around $375 each, and thats plus a headset(very similar to this one) and antennas. Plus the studying for the ham test she didn't want in the first place, but she did and were legal.

SCALA RIDER Q2 | CARDO SYSTEMS INC.
This is what we use bike to bike, but it's blue tooth so it can be paired to a cell phone. You can talk with your helmet set, she talks on her phone's hands-free system. Can be set to be voice activated or always on. As far as the helmet system, the headphones and mic are very comfortable.

Well the trip went fine but, unfortunately, communications were pretty much limited to sign language. I couldn't manage to find exactly what I needed. The trouble is finding a headset that blocks out the wind noise; I have to have something plugging up my ears so the wind doesn't kill them. What I need is something like this
Etymotic Research, Inc. - ER6i Isolator Earphones attached to a wireless headset/microphone which can be used with the types of radios you mentioned. I just don't know if such a device exists. I've looked everywhere and asked many people. The technology is there, I just don't know if it's been combined in the required way.

I wear the Etymotic earplugs with the Scala Rider system and have no trouble hearing. In fact, I hear the intercom better with the earplugs than without.

ChatterBoxUSA XBi2 Open Face Kit
I have this and I paired it with my blackberry (or any phone that has bluetooth) and I'm able to make/receive calls with it. I got mine from ebay and paid around 150 for it. If you get 2 and if your wife rides as well then you can talk to each other with it. *That link says open face but they have a full face one. Not sure why the link is like that. * |

I have the same quandary. I use earphones already, and I love them. What I would like, is a bluetooth connectivity device that I can use my own earphones with.
