Hey guys, I don't know if this is in the right place to post, but I've been thinking of buying a helmet cam since I've been riding and I wasn't able to find any threads that pertained to helmet-mountable cameras other than people taking their digital cameras and fitting it into their helmet.

I went riding with a guy that used a bullet cam wired to his camcorder in his tank bag. He had it mounted on his front fender with velcro and you don't even notice it's there. The video quality was good.
I've seen them at the local security and spy stores. Here is a site I found on google. http://www.spycameras.com/main.htm These might be easier to mount on your helmet.

I would suggest going with the HC-1 kit from the Helmet camera site. Using a recording devide that goes straight to an SD Card will make your life a lot easier. A 2-Gig card should give you 3 or 4 hours of MPEG4 video. If you need more another 2Gig card should be like $50 so you could record an entire day.
Also, you should be able to hook a mic into your helmet so you can record youself while you are riding. Can't wait to see what you make.

They say they're all on backorder. Maybe a tank mount camera would work better. I do like that DVR record though.
I wa sjust looking at http://www.sportbikecam.com/. That way I can mount any camcorder on there and get high quality video. Last edited by rubix777 : 02-11-2007 at 01:54 AM. |

Take a look at this
It is cheaper, still uses a solid state recorder (no moving parts), and the mic is on a separate lead. That way we can hear you cussing as you figure out that you are coming in to a turn too hot. I may have to get one too so I can be just like Mordeth13 a record my commutes to work through Dallas traffic. [updated] That kit only has the camera and battery pack. You would need to find a camera w/ a aux video input. They sell the same DVR everybody else seems to be using in their kits. There are some cheaper choices out there you could use instead. [update again] AIPTEK MPVR is the DVR you want. It just uses SD cards. The ACROS thing everybody else is pushing has a hard drive. One hard bounce will kill it, so if you drop your bike or even hit a pot hole too hard you will wind up with a dead unit. Solid state records are a much better choice for this application. The AIPTEK things can be found for under $150 so you could put together an entire kit for about $400 by the time you are done.

No one is commenting on the Oregon Scientific link? It looks like the ATC2K is a completely self contained unit for $130! Am I missing something? The vid they posted looks excellent.

It does look nice, but it doesn't seem to say how much video it can record on 2gb.

Been looking at the ATC2K camera on several different web sites. Looks like it will do 58 minutes on a 2GB chip. I'm finding them at $100 on e-bay plus $15 or so shipping...

Great googlie mooglie - I totally missed the Orgen Sci thing. That freaking rocks. There is a Tony Hawk thing out there but it sucks in my opinion - too kiddy cammish for my purposes. Th OS thing looks like an ideal package. However, it is missing a Mic so if you are planning to use htis to vlog you'll have to have a separate voice recorder and then sync your voice to the video, which isn't too hard if you are careful

Wind noise is going to screw up most mics. Put a piece of tape over it.
If you want to do voice over vlogging - like I do - get a separate voice recorder. Then use a program like ULEAD VideoStudio to sync the two back up. Just hold your hand out in frame do a count down on your fingers and vocally do the count down in sync. when you get to zero you are recording voice and video. In the editor you sync your voice and fingers together and the two will play seemlessly from there on. Viola - you're a video production engineer. At least that is my plan.

Asked about the ATC2K camera on a couple of other web forums. The consensus was that the camera lacked motion control and you could not get a steady picture with it. Bummer...

I just ordered the core system from Skullcamz. I plan to use it with a AIPTEK camera I picked up at TARGET. Total cost for my system is a bit less than $400.
Once it gets here I'll post some videos on YouTube.

Here is the result of my first run around with the camera
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp-42Br66cY the camera is tiled in its holder and I need to work on the mic positioning. But overall the results seem pretty good.
