Typically ski shops will have thick socks that are non-wool. Also, mens dress socks tend to be thicker than your general sock as well.

You can also try the mental trick of "think Bahamas, think warm!".

The socks I got from the ski shop are called "Wick Dry". I don't think they are made of wool.

I have a pair of Teknic Thunder gloves that I got on clearance. Keep the hands plenty warm but they are super bulky. Sometimes I hit my horn when I try to cancel the turn signal! I also have a pair of winter motorcycle/snowmobile boots I got at Sierra Trading Post. I'm not sure if they still have them but they will keep you warm to -40 degrees. For my legs, I wear jeans with chaps and then over those a pair of River Road Mojave Mesh Pants with the plastic rain liner in. I also use a neck gaiter. My problem is keeping my body warm. Even with a polarfleece and an insulated vest under my leather coat, my arms get cold. I just bought a Gerbings heated liner but it hasn't arrived yet. I have high hopes for the Gerbings.

The hunting type or Wick Dry socks are great. Look at any outdoor store or sporting goods store. I wear soccer socks. They come up to the knees, stay up and wear well inside a waterproof boot. I also found the highway bar chaps cut alot of the cold air so unless it's really below freezing you should be okay.

They make a chin cover for most helmets to keep the air from bouncing off your chest and into your face. I wear a gator mask under my helmet. Also I have a full ski suit, jacket, ski bib ( pants ) , warm gloves. Ski suit is designed for severe cold at high speeds. Skiers can go as fast as 80 down big slopes. Keeps me warm all winter. Don't let the cold stop you from riding, but you don't have to spend a ton of money on heated stuff to stay toastie.

I first started riding in ND. I rode up through part of November my first year. I found that these things come in handy:
1. Chaps
2. Long underwear
3. Wool socks
4. Wool scarf
5. Neoprene face mask
6. Sweatshirt
7. Undershirt
8. Leather jacket
9. Small stretchy knit gloves
10. Larger thick padded leather gloves
11. Full face helmet
12. Insulated boots

The liner will keep you warm. You may also want to consider the heated gloves as well.

I have the jacket liner and the over pants...

and the gloves - my little 800 hates me when i crank it all up but it keeps me warm

i suggest not getting the pants liner... it works well sure, but i just like being able to put something OVER my clothes rather then it touching my legs all day

if i had to do it all over again i think i would have gotten the jacket, the pants then the gloves

no liners

I went through 3 sets of leather gloves until I spent the cash last night on some Gerbing G3 heated gloves.

Holy crap am I glad I spent the money! My fingers were nice and toasty compared to trying those little heat pouches inside gloves.

For the rest of it, I have leather chaps, and a fleece neck gaitor with a neoprene hood. Just wear long johns and jeans and a sweatshirt with my leather jacket and I'm good. As long as my hands/fingers stay warm, the rest of me is good.

Gerbings rule!

I am in the same boat. I've been able to keep warm with my gear down to 15 degrees F except for my fingers. Guess before next winter I will need to plunk down some major cash for Gerbings gloves. I went the REI glove liner route with a heat pack insert; that only works down to about 25 degrees F. Below that there does not seem to be a good non-electric solution unless you don't have to use your clutch and brake levers!

Wink Cold Weather Riding

It rarely gets below freezing in this part of Oregon. With temps in the 35 degrees F. range I wear a Walls Blizzard Pruf one-piece suit, $90 but much less expensive if it can be had at a local Walmart (don't get the online version - it isn't really the Blizzard Pruf item despite the description), looks uncool but does the job, with a sweatshirt and street clothes underneath. I have a full face helmet, boots, and supposedly insulated gloves. After about an hour my fingers get cold so I may have to do something about that, otherwise I'm fine.

Always FF Helmet
If really cold, a fleece baklava
If over 45, fleece neck collar
Fieldsheer Textile Windproof and Waterproof Jacket with Thermal Liner
Fieldsheer Textile Windproof and Waterproof Overpants with Thermal Liner
Long Johns and Layers as Needed
Wet Weather Socks
Leather and Armored Boots from Joe Rocket
Rain Covers for Boots (really help break the wind)
Toasty Toes Air Activated Heating Packs for feet (2 pr at Wally's World for under $2)
Handlebar Chaps
Crash Bar Chaps
Gerbing G3 Electric Gloves

Stay toasty down to about 20 degrees. I look goofy I know, but I'm ridin'!!

I ordered the hippo hands and they do make a difference...but do not solve the problem. As my job situation has...ah...eliminated my daily ride, I will wait another season, save my ducets, and buy the liner/glove/dually controller set up from Firstgear.

FirstGear killimanjaro Jacket with liner and a cold gear undershirt and a long sleeve cotton, Balaclava thats wind proof for the neck and chin, First Gear's heated carbon gloves, and HTII water proof textile over pants with jeans or sweat pants underneath and non perforated boots. That tides me over well down to about 25 degrees.

Joe Rockets stuff isnt bad but honestly, I'd buy cold gear from Fieldsheer, or FirstGear or Aerostich.

I had some clothes left over from my military "life" that i've been mixing with other clothes. I wear a light nomex hood under my helmet, a sweat shirt under my leather jacket, and set of snowmobile bibs. For my fingers, i had a pair of nomex gloves under a good pair of leather gloves.

NOT ME! Last year was the worst winter we had in the past ten seasons.

Put the bike in the trailer and head to South Florida for the winter.
