Avast! me hearties. Dem's some fine looking outer wear. I like the "bones" look! You'd 'spec that coming from a pirate wouldn't ye though.
But seriously Funny I should find this thread one day after ordering my new jacket. The current leather inventory is three ride specific jackets, two bomber types, and one topcoat. My wife says that the topcoat used at least one full cow to make. A worthy sacrifice from my point of view. Anyway my favorite has been one made by Wilsons. It's heavy, thick, well vented, with a removeable quilted lining a perminent mesh and all the pockets I need. It has been the go to jacket from 45f to 105f since 05. I thought I'd like to try a textile type with some armour so I spent a few hours (days really) looking at all the different types, features, and prices on the net. Side comment: Ya ever notice that most local bike shops DON"T carry the brands everyone talks about. So I ended up with the Fieldsheer Adventure in basic black. As soon as I get it I'll post a review. Last edited by Capt. Redbeard : 02-12-2008 at 06:13 PM. Reason: Update |

Try Fox Creek Leather...I've got a v1.8 from them, it works great...It is now discontinued for a similar model with armor pockets built in. Nice part is they will custom fit any of their jackets...they send out a trial jacket, tell them what you want altered and in about 3 weeks you're good to go. USA made also!

I like leather. I have three leather jackets for general wear but they are garment weight stuff and not suitable for riding. For riding, I have a TourMaster Transition jacket; textile, armor, water-proof, zip out lining and lots of venting options. My reasons for getting this insteed of leather is that living here in the Puget Sound area, you ARE going to be riding in the rain. When leather gets wet it gets heavy and it stays wet.

It warmed up to 45sh today and the roads were clear and dry so I decide to test out my new jacket. I'm very happy with it and I don't think theres a better jacket on the market right now for the price.

Jacket update: I ordered the Fieldsheer Adventure but the supplier said they no longer deal with Fieldsheer. Well it was Friday when I read that e-mail and Saturday was open. Found a store on Old Montery Highway in San Jose that had a wonderful selection of stuff. Found a First gear jacket and a Zox modular helmet. Tried both and here is my gear report.
First Gear Kilimanjaro Jacket. Riding in 45-50 degree air at 70 yeilds a wind chill of between 31 and 38. I only felt a touch of the cold on my wrist when I didn't get my glove on correctly. A little tug at the next stop sign and it was back to warmth. I guess that would sum it up performance wise. Warm. I'll find out as the year progresses how good the vents are, and if it's waterproof. As I said in my previous post, I wear my leather into the hundreds with out a major problem. I'll see how this compares. As to the rest of the jacket features, they all work as advertised. More pockets than a clown suit and serious hook/loop to keep my stuff from falling out. Zox Nevado modular helmet: After reading a few user reviews and the one on WebBikeWorld, I thought I'd try one on. I had just put on a Nolan 102. Well the Navado R fit me better than the Nolan. Even the guy behind the counter said they were "seriously comfortable". I bought it and on the same ride as the jacket test enjoyed almost everything about it. Exceptional visibility, and without my usual earplugs the quietest of my three helmets. I installed the chin guard which I think may act to keep wind from entering the bottom of the helmet. Vents worked fine as far as I could tell wearing balaclavas and such. It felt slightly top heavy in the store but the first ride yielded no hot spots or neck strain. The flip up is solid and latches tight up and down. This means you have to really want to open, or close it. Throw in the fact that it was under $120 and that my sun glasses slipped on easily, and I think I've got a winner. So far Last edited by Capt. Redbeard : 01-30-2008 at 07:46 PM. |

FWIW....
I just got a River Road Mesa jacket. Less than 2 bills, nice thick leather, and includes both armor (removable) and a full, removable, full sleeve thermal liner. I'm pleased and highly recommend.

Was riding in 32 degrees with regular shirt on under this. No problem. (chaps on of course too) Heavy leather good stitching etc. $99
Everyone has a different price point they're willing to pay to get something they want. Stylish gear is going to cost. Does it mean it's not worth it? Heck no. If it's what you want then it's worth it. When Canon came out with the 1Ds digital pro camera it listed for $8,000. Guess who was the first kid in the area to have one. LOL Was it worth it? Ya to me it was but like everything else quality is of the upmost importance. |

Hot Leathers All Leather Motorcycle Jackets $99.95 Cheriann has ordered from them and has been happy with their products. Just mentioning that so it doesn't seem I'm the only one that has bought from them on here. |
