Default Is New Enough legit?

So I've been browsing around newenough.com, they seem to have some of the best prices. Last week I found an HJC helmet I liked, printed up the page and took it into a local shop and asked if they had it. They said no, but we can order it. Then the guy saw a price and went and talked to the owners dad who OK'd it. Their price was 189.99 and new enough was 144.

Then today I go in there to with another print out for an icon jacket. The owners wife was helping me and she said the guy was basically selling the jacket for cost which is violating the terms of his contract with icon and that she was gonna turn him in. She did however give me the jacket for the 145 price instead of the 195 regular price.

My question is was she just bluffing or are the new enough guys really doing stuff they're not supposed to as far as the prices they are selling stuff for? It really doesn't matter to me if the shop had told me they wouldn't match I would have just ordered it online.

They seem to be the ROSS or Winners of the bike clothing world. Can't see that they are doing anything "illegal". They are likely just buying up last years, over-stocked, or outdated merchandise and re-selling it at a discount. No harm there.

You dealer however, may have a contract with a specific manufacturer as it relates to pricing.

I've bought gear from them, and they have a great combination of customer service, low prices, and fast shipment (with reasonable shipping fees).

Check out their blowouts on Ebay! I got a 1 pc Teknic perforated suit (their Chicane model) for $99 + shipping from NewEnough last year.

I got a Power Trip mesh jacket and Power Trip leather overpants from them. I'm a happy customer.

Alright cool. Yeah when I go pick up my stuff I'll ask them if they mind matching the new enough prices and if its an inconvinience I'll just buy it online but I imagine the shop would rather make some money than none.

+1 on the bluff.

Under SOME circumstances, manufacturers can regulate a dealer's margin, but that is typically restricted to catalog items IF the manufacturer doesn't have a dealer in the same market.

Example: Fender and Gibson used to prohibit Sam Ash, Musician's Friend, and Guitar Center from publishing ANY price in mail-out catalogs unless they actually had a store in that market area. That's why from time to time you'll see "Call for low low price" on items like Shoei lids.

Internet is an interesting twist... it can be viewed as a catalog, but it doesn't seem that these old contracts have been updated to take it into account.

BUT.... Being in violation of your dealer agreement isn't "illegal" as far as being a criminal act. It would be actionable and a dealer could have a legitimate civil claim against another dealer for undercutting their local market.

She can call Icon and "turn them in"... and Icon will look at the sales numbers for Newenough, and will look at the sales numbers for the local shop, and just might pull the line from the local shop!

I'm actually quite surprised that they price-matched an online store. I've tried that with various hobby shops, and I actually had one dealer ring up the item and put it on the shelf behind him. I asked for it, and he said to come back in 5 days because that's when I'd have it if I ordered it online.
Told him to f-off and give me a refund, and he said he'd be happy to mail me a refund check.
Another one said that he'd match the price, but tried to tack on another $20 since that's what shipping would cost. Told him to take a hike, went to the online dealer, and ordered MORE stuff to bring my total to over $100 and got free shipping.... and no sales tax.

Yeah they were actually pretty cool about matching both the helmet and the jacket. I said "hey if you guys don't want to match thats fine with me I'll just order it online". Their choice.

Rich those are some funny stories about the dealers trying to hold it for 5 days or charge for shipping. The tax and shipping usually cancel each other out when buying online vs. locally so its pretty much the same.

Another +1 for New Enough. We're happy customers. Bought MrsBennice a new helmet and jacket a few weeks ago from them, and have bought jackets and gloves from them before.

If you go to the Kawi web site and look at the apparel there they often have some great deals -if you are interested in Kawi apparel.

I've found differently...I bought my helmet from sportbiketrackgear.com a scorpion EXO-400 got free shipping on it. I've been looking at jackets to and I really like the Icon ARC...although it's expensive most advertise it at $295 both newenough and sportbiketrackgear will sell it for $240 if you email for best price...Telling this to a dealer they looked into it and also offered to order one and sell for $240. The difference is that newenough will charge for shipping, dealer you'll have to pay tax, but sportbiketrackgear has free shipping on all orders over $150 and some under. My $99 EXO-400 Warhawk helmet shipped for free...always keeping a eye out on ebay helps to.

I have made many many purchases fron New enough over the years.
I have always had great service, and prompt shipping.
Their prices rock, and i am a loyal, satisfied customer.

I cannot see how it is illegal for a store to sell something at a price they choose. If i buy 1,000 widgets, and choose to then sell them at only a 25% mark up, thats my choice, as I bought them legally.
If my competitor next door is unhappy that i sell more than he does, because he marks his widgets up 60% instead of 25% like i do, thats his problem, not mine.
I just bought 2 new Honda motorcycles last week.
I tried hard to buy them locally, but the dealer in my town would not drop his price, so i drove the 90 minutes required to another dealer who was more than happy to sell the bikes to me at a discount.
Its a small dealer, in a smaller town, and myself and many friends, and acquaintences i know have travelled the 90 minutes to buy from him, as he sells everything from bikes, to accessories way cheaper than the local guys.
If my local shop had even made an effort, i likely would have bought from them, but they would not budge 2 cents from full MSRP on the bikes.
I also bought a new helmet while there, that i had not p[lanned on buying.
But he offered me too good a deal to pass it up, on a sweet Nolan helmet.

If newenough was breaking any laws, i bet he manufacturers would long ago have had lawyers all over them.
So your local dealer is full of BS if you ask me.

I live 20 minutes from their warehouses (plural), they have gobs of stuff along with good prices & customer service. A lot of their stuff is leftovers from previous years, but there is nothing wrong with it.

Alright that pretty much what I thought the deal was. She didn't exactly say they were doing anything illegal, just that she thought he was "in violationg of his contract" and maybe he is maybe he isn't.

I should get all the new gear I bought tomorrow, I bought it from the local shop, but with new enough prices

Your local shop is either mistaken or just full of it. As Rich said, many distributers regulate their dealers with M.A.P. - Minimum Advertised Price. This, in theory, keeps a level playing field for both the super-stores and the mom-n-pops stores so there's no under-cutting.

Your dealer is assuming that new enough is violating their MAP price, when MAP typically only applies to "current" items, not left overs.

I just bought from New enough the other day. I'm expecting the delivery today. Go for it.

also:

a lot of their stuff you have to e-mail for prices or whatever, which doesn't violate MAP agreements (new production stuff). Their closeouts are where the deals are though
