I'm not a big fan of chaps, so I wondered what else everyone might be using for leg warmth?
Feel free to say if you think chaps are the way to go.

When I took my Christmas day ride (coldest day ride of the winter), I wore polypro thermal unders, jeans, and an old pair of insulated ski bibs with a nylon shell. The combination kept my legs comfortable, and added an extra layer on my lower torso.

Overpants.
I got some Olympia Ranger overpants and with the liner they are incredebly warm. Leather or not doesn't really matter, but if you get textile, make sure it's wind proof. I like the Ranger pants as they are so much lighter than the leather overpants I had (which is doubly important when effectively wearing two pairs of pants) and warmer to boot. Way better than chaps as they will actually give some protection in a fall. Last edited by Uthor : 04-21-2008 at 01:25 AM. |

Almost every mainstream riding gear company makes leather pants designed for sport bike riders - it's the most popular type of riding gear ![]() For example, this is what I have pretty much (always) worn - a pair of AGV Universal Sport pants. The version I own do not have the big A logo on the knees, only a very discreet "AGVSport" embroidered into the leather by the hip pocket. A little bit of black magic marker and poof, all gone...instant pair of (armored) cruiser pants. Zips up to (almost all) my riding jackets for extra security. Just go to any mainstream retailer, like Dennis Kirk DennisKirk.com - Metric Bikes - Men's Apparel and find dozens and dozens of sportbike-acceptable pant styles! |

I found pants from 45th Parallel Design, with goretex outer layer, nylon inner layer and quilted zip out lining. This co doesnt seem to be marketing under this name any more, but it matches my Tour Master jacket

I, personally, feel a little silly on my cruiser wearing my leather pants, but damn if they don't give the best protection (unlike chaps that maybe save a little rash on your knees and that's it). Plus, I like telling people I own a tight pair of leather pants. |

35 degrees and above: leather jacket and rain pants. Just need to keep the wind off the dungarees.
34 and below: Arctic Cat full leather snowmobile suit and gloves. If it can keep ya warm at -40 degrees in the White Mountains, it can handle the local interstate and valleys of the area....

But yeh, chaps on a cruiser are the way to go. They provide warmth and protection, cut thru the wind, and keep your jeans clean. Best of all you have a ready made Village People Hallowe'en Party costume.
