Default Got called a newbie rider, for wearing gear!

I rode my bike (900 Custom) to work for the first time ever today. Got lots of compliments on it from lots of people.

At the end of the day, as i am getting ready to leave, i start to put on my gear (FF helmet, armored mesh jacket, and gloves).

Then some **** really ticked me off. Called me a noob rider for wearing a jacket. Stated that "If you crash it's not going to do anything for you, it's just going to shred. You must be a noob rider".

Now mind you, i am a new rider, but whether i have 2 months experience or 20 years, i will never ride a motorcycle without the proper gear.

I shouldn't make too much of it, but it just upset me to hear that. There is so much peer pressure out there to look like the classic biker. Just sad that so many people rather look cool than ride as safe as possible.

Like someone said, "their are old bikers and their are bold bikers.............but their are no old bold bikers."
I'll happily gear up and do my best to become an old biker.

I wear a FF on my cruiser. (besides the leather etc.) Sometimes I get looks from the hard core riders with half helmets etc. Like I care. I ride for me and me alone. I'm not into the looks one thinks they must have. I value my body. Just ignore them.

Mesh jackets do not shred. Seen too many people go down with them on and are completely rash free.

I'm one of them.

Let the fools pick the gravel out of the arms and legs for weeks afterwards.

Some people are just stupid. If they don't want ff helmets, more power to them. But don't criticize those that want to be protected.

A lot of people only seem to embrace gear after something awful happens. I don't mind that people choose to ride without it, after all its their right, but don't put me down for looking out after my own skin.

Do I look silly?

Maybe...
My wife says I look like a bumblebee.

I don't mind, I chose the look.
I want to be seen, be reasonably protected, and live to be at least 99.

What does it matter if someone's a noob? Weren't we all at one time? They should be welcomed to the club. I could care less what other riders are or are not wearing - maybe they are a noob, and if so, what better time to be protected - or maybe someone got the crap scared out of them in a previous accident or close call and want to be protected. I choose to wear FF, leather jacket, leather pants (shift havoc pants - great!), gloves and boots - I don't care if someone has an opinion about my gear - after all, who is going to suffer the pain and trauma if I go down?

I don't get on mine without all the gear. If I'm going down I want to minimize the amount of flesh I lose.

A local dealer had a mesh jacket on display that had been for quite a slide ! it did not shred, or melt (more what i expected). That convinced me to get one. And in Yellow too, I want to be seen !

OK. Used to have one in green, but they don't make them anymore

I guess I'll have to go with yellow.

Well I know for a fact that some don't shred, I lowsided and landed on my shoulder, and I broke my collar bone...and the jacket?? It just has a few scuff marks on it and is still very much wearable!!! If it weren't for my jacket when I fell I probly would have broken my entire shoulder...I think the guy that told you this will probly be way more frustrated when he ends up in the ER/OR after dumping his bike...well if he has one

I would of responded by saying "better a noob that walks away from an accident then a squid that doesnt!" and then added "Oh by the way wheres your bike??"
