Default helmets, bluetooth, blah blah...

someone explain how this stuff works. I'm not very well versed in the "modern" conveniences... I don't even have a cell phone. I would, however, like to be able to talk to whoever is riding on my passenger seat... wife or son...

What is needed to be able to talk to your passenger? Just a "bluetooth" helmet, or do you need something else... like an earphone or something?

sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm not really into this modern stuff....

You'll need two things

a helmet that you can use the communication device in as I don't think you
can on all (could be wrong here)

a communication device

bluetooth is the technology not the actual device. There are alot of devices out there that will do what you want, I don't use one so I have no recommendations, but I am sure some one here will be able to provide more info.

I use the BlueAnt system for my wife and I, and like it. Here's the link. You'll have to get two of them. You can find them on Ebay, sometimes sold in pairs.
BlueAnt Wireless North America - Bluetooth hands free, car kits and mobile communication devices for the USA

thanks for the BlueAnt link. I looked over the web pages and learned a few things...

Now, they say that their system works on any existing full face or open face helmet... but what does it mean when I see a helmet advertised as "bluetooth ready"...? Does that mean that the helmet has the communication device already built-in next to your ear, and that you don't need the BlueAnt communication devices?

I think what you might be refering to is something like the Nolan N-Conn line of helmets. These helmets are already set up in such a manner that you can "pop" off one little panel and plug in their communication device.

I dont know of any hemlets that come with the communication equipment built in (but this doesn't mean there aren't any)

I assuming Bluetooth ready means there is a pocket where your ears go that the comm device can be applied to. My wife and I have a pair of Fulmer open face helmets which has a pocket on both sides. The cheek pad pops off so the speaker/microphone set can be installed. The blutooth unit itself is mounted on the exterior of the helmet. I'll try to post some pics of mine tonight so you can get a better idea of what I'm saying.

Brother in Law and my sister use a wired intercom system. They're on the same bike, so wireless isn't necessary. I'm not sure which brand, but I think it might be by chatterbox.
