Any recommendations on a DOT half-helmet that has smaller profile (minimally required foam) so that one doesn't look like a martian wearing it? Is there such a thing or the only option is to buy a non-DOT or "novelty" helmet?

ACC is the smallest I've been able to find. I don't personally have one yet, but I've been doing research for a couple months and plan on trying one.
They also say that the only test that their non-DOT helmets do not pass is the spear test. They have a much smaller profile, but again, not DOT. |

Vega makes one that's pretty small also. Maybe not as small as the Headtrip but it's about a third of the cost.

under a $60 budget, there is ZOX. Look at the ALTA and the OLD SCHOOL.
The old school is a tad more of what you expect. Both are DOT approved.

Mine is DOT and is very nice. MUCH smaller than my wife's old Zox: http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/lid1.jpg http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/vulcan/lid2.jpg Just got back from a ride to Utah and it's so light and comfortable that even though AZ and UT are optional, both my wife and I wore ours the entire trip. Another bonus... once you buy one and are in their database, you'll be pleased to find out that you get a 10% discount on future purchases. When you order, especially this time of year, they'll tell you 6-8 weeks. They're sandbagging... both of mine arrived in less than 4 weeks.

I just got an HJC Nomad, 1/2 helmet. Very light, comfortable and does not make your head look like a mushroom cloud. For the last 8 yrs I went without a helmet because of comfort, simply bought a lightweight 1/2 helmet that is comfortable and now I'm covered.....get it, covered....
It was only $90 bones. I don't subscribe to the "I'v got to have a $600 helmet to be protected" My guess is that they are all pretty compatable in protection. But that may open up a whole differerent can of worms.

That's not bad at all... looks to be about the same design as my THH (in all honesty, probably made on the same production line).

Hey S.D., I have the same helmet and it looks the same (lol) on me. If your interested we can start filming the new blockbuster, "Dork and Dorkier". Interested? Ride Safe, we wouldn't want to have the EMT's pull those dork helmets of us now would we?
