The helmet, head warmer, leather jacket with liner and warm sweater if needed, warm gloves, thick socks and great, warm shoes - but the pants?????
I tried long underwear with my kevlar-lined jeans. That will work for now, but not later in the year.

I have Columbia brand fleece pants I wear over long underwear, and then my 1 piece leathers over that, and it keeps me very warm.

Nothing blocks the wind (and insulates - just ask those cows standing in the field on a cold winder day)) like leather! I have overpants as opposed to chaps so the buns & back of the legs stay warm as well! Then..as said...chaps on highway bars (for the cruiser crowd) makes a difference as well.

Haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but I just bought a pair of chaps with removable thinsulate liner. I've ridden in 40 degree temp this year and the only part of me that was actually feeling cold was my lower legs. The chaps should take care of that.

Last winter I wore nylon covered, lined ski bibs over jeans over thinsulate underwear. Worked pretty good.
Couldn't afford to buy anything bike-specific at the time, so I improvised.

I tried gaining weight and wearing Courderoy Pants. You run around with the pants on, the added weight creates friction and heats up your legs. Jump on the bike real quick and drive 10 miles, then stop and repeat.
Now the real deal, they make pants out of gortex for cross country skiing they are lightweight, waterproof and slow/stop the wind. You can wear them over your pants and then use lightweight skiing underwear underneath the pants for the colder days, it wicks moisture from your body and keeps it dry as well. On long rides, you have to be carefull, you can actually get dehydrated. |

Those are great ideas that never came to mind. Another biker I know wears snowboarding pants as overpants. He swears my them. I'm not really a leather chaps kind of guy - on second thought, I was never a black cruiser, black leather jacket kind of guy either!

Anything to block out wind. I wear Ranger overpants from Olympia which are warm, windproof, and light. 40's with no liner are about my limit. I haven't seen how far I can go with the liner as it's just too damn warm.
I wore leather overpants one year, but they were really heavy and not that warm. I ended up wearing long underwear, jeans, and leathers and was cold in the 50's. |

Long underwear with heavy pants (Cortech or Draggin' Jeans) and if it's below 50 I wear thick rain pants from Nelson-Rigg which work as chaps. I recently bought some long motorcycle socks that come up just below the knee which keep my legs warm.

Large sized lowers and chaps on the highway bars. It was about 50 here this morning. I have both on and I rode to work with dress pants on. I was fine. I didn't even zip my jacket up all the way.

One biker I met told me he wore "pantyhose" under his jeans, and swears that it really keeps his lower torso extremely warm lol. I still haven't mustered the courage to try that one.
