I just got a new leather riding jacket from leatherup.com do I need toput something on it before using it, like a leather conditioner or wax?
If so, what is the best to use and how difficult is it to put on? Thanks in advance.......... |

I'd figure a new jacket should, hopefully, be ok off the bat. However it shouldn't hurt to use a decent conditioner/treatment just in case. I know Wilson's Leather has some but to be honest I'm not sure I'd recommend it if it's a decent jacket. The stuff Fox Creek sells is supposedly pretty good, I want to order some and try it on my trench to see how well it works. Aside from that I'd have to google and see what I came up with.
Worse comes to worse there's always Kiwi but be ready to spend some time there (colored/neutral and Mink oil options, etc).

I just did my First Classics brand dark brown leather jacket last night with Pitch-Blend Leather oil from Fox Creek. Took about 45 minutes to do the entire jacket so I multi-tasked and watched Law and Order reruns while applying the oil. Looks great!

I can tell you a cheap way. Pickup some Johnson PLEDGE. I've used this wax before on leather, including baseball gloves... and seems to work without problems. (Hey, its wax. Although, it is probably not as good as stuff designed for just leather.) |

I dropped my trench off at a so-called professional place in Orlando when it was in bad need of cleaning/conditioning. Got it back and not only was it stiff for almost a month it stunk to high hell. I've a hunch they used something similar to pledge, industrial strength.
Stink didn't wear off completely for a couple months, I was NOT happy.

Like I said, I used it for years on baseball gloves, alway made the supple and the lemon (Lemon Pledge) smelled good. Never heard of industrial strength... or having a bad smell. (But then again, perhaps there are people in the world that do not like lemons.)

I don't mind lemons but the fabricated smell in cleaners tends to be overpowering IMO. Kinda like food companies tend to overdo citric acid as a flavoring.
