Default What would you give?

I have a 1997 Vulcan 1500 "A" model with 29,000 miles. I bought this bike three years ago with 10,000 miles on it. I have taken very good care of it as I do all my toys. I have installed "L" model handlebars with kury grips and levers, hiway pegs, jardine backrest, Hardchrome 2-3/4" Bigstraight exhaust and a Cobra airbox removal kit with new jets. Also has new tires. I have recently developed a problem with the transmission popping out of second gear under acceleration. All other gears are fine. I recently purchased an '07 V2K so I thought I would try to sell this one. The "A" model (BUBF) has a great following and if you are familiar with them you know this is a great bike. This bike runs and handles beautifully other than the trans problem. I am located in Spartanburg, SC. So..........make an offer????????

NADA says $2,490.00 less $800.00 as above = $1,690.00 current value.

Dang, I'd go for it w/o talking to the S/O if it was close by, and I don't have any space for it.

How hard is it to rebuild the tranny? I might be interested in it as a winter project since I'll be looking for something to do anyway.

I haven't done it on a twin, but have on an inline 4. You will need to split the crankcase to do it so most of the labor is getting to the point that you can do that. Drain all fluids, remove engine, remove heads, remove pistons, clutch, etc. You will probably need to replace the 2nd gear and/or whatever gear mates into it, that part should be one of the easiest steps. You might want to hone the cylinders and replace the piston rings since you would have everything apart. Might be able to find a used transmission to salvage gears off of. It took me a few days, but I wasn't in a hurry and I was able to muscle an inline 600 around by myself, a 1500 seems like it would weigh more. You will also need to replace all of the paper gaskets you run into and any others that are recommended.

When I asked around for mine I got quotes $700+.

I don't think this is the POG problem. It sounds more like bent shift forks.

Agreed, I'm wondering if this motor has the Plastic Oil Gear?

I did my 97L this spring and replaced 2nd and 3rd and shift fork. Parts were around $400.00 with gaskets, I pulled the motor and took it to the dealer to split the cases, with there labor it was 756.00. I would do it myself if I had to do it again I had 15000 mile on it. If the motor has not been gotten into before it will have the plastic oil gear. If you do 1 yourself take alot of pictures as you take it apart and save all the headakes.
