Default Teryx

Having purchased a new Teryx from Beartooth Kawasaki last week I have just now had a little time to put some miles on it.

The power available just by pressing down of the gas pedal is great, but the ride this rig provides has me really impressed. I have now taken it through heavy sand whoopti-doos, over boulders the size of a 350 Chevy engine and did some fairly rough hill climbs all in comfort. Kawasaki's fully independant suspension is great! Didn't even spill my coke

The brakes, along with how the belt drive system uses compression going down the steep stuff surprised me ... the dang thing acted like it was a stick shift in grandma gear on full compression. I like this!

Heading out across the old dirt roads here in the desert it doesn't take long to find yourself cruising at 40 MPH. In low range 4X4 with the front locking differential engaged this RUV is more like a tractor with more then enough power to handle obstacles.

There are only two things I have found that could have been thought out more by Kawasaki.

The gas pedal needs a better design ... its very touchy and your foot position isn't very stable causing you to surge a lot.

The other is the fuel tank ... it needs a fuel gauge. The stock configuration provides you with a sight window of sorts to check your fuel level, but you can't see the fuel level through the heavy plastic tank.

Some of the places my Beartooth Buggy went today.

Good thing there are disc brakes in the Teryx. I got stopped in time. Just in front of the Teryx is a mine shaft that isn't marked or fenced.

Would have been a hell of ride down that mine shaft!

Great pics Ken.
How about a putting a piece of dense foam over the gas pedal, it may help numb out the sensitivity a bit.

And love the old mineshafts, you know what a mine buff I am. (Where's the rope and flashlight?)

The Teryx wouldn't have fit down in there, but the visions of it with its back wheels waving in the air didn't do much for me.

I may try that foam stuff, maybe some of that foam insulation used on pipes ????

I do know you and your love for those places ... I go into them for one reason only; to pull dead people out of them. Please be as safe as you can when you do any more exploring. It drove me nuts when you guys went into that one off Beartooth Pass.

Yikes...

I love old mines, but not enough to go into them.... at least not very far.

I'd much rather explore a sunken ship 100ft under water

You guys found "the hole" for the Smith mine, or was this a different one that we missed?

You are much safer at 100' exploring the ship, especially if you have achieved all the certifications.

I have pulled many people out of mine shafts over the years and unless there is a body needing recovery in that shaft I won't get close to the portal.

We found it. Carlo, Dave (Spok), Kim (Moparman) and others went exploring as I shook my head at them. They found a nice snake while out there to!

Like with diving, who you're with makes all the difference in the world.
I used to hang with some of the Florida cave divers (17 hours in the water, 400ft max depth, 3 mile cave penetrations) and they deal with cave-ins, silt-outs, and equipment issues, same as a dry caver would.

The "wrong" buddy can kill you at 50ft in open water.

The Smith Mine was pretty safe really. They blew the shaft entrance closed years ago. I was surprised at how complete the structures still were, that was a pretty coll little "excursion".

I've been on a few guided tours deep into mines, but never really ventured into a shaft i've happened upon by myself. (Tracy seems to play the part of common sense to my lack of it sometimes....... )

I suspect the verticle shaft is close to 100' down. Can see where it splits off into two directions at the bottom, but it took a huge maglight to see the bottom.

It is very dangerous, but also common place here in Nevada. BLM, once notified, will come out and put up a wire fence with small signs around them to keep people out.

Most of the old shafts I have found out here were dug from the late 1800's to just after the turn of the century. Not many records were kept back then.

I am sure it was a gold mining operation. Lots of quartz in the area below the shaft.

Here is a link to one of the last recovery operations I did. Please be safe in all the spelunking activity.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) - Metal and Nonmetal Mine Fatal Accident Investigation Report: 11/09/1999 - Fatality #48 - Fall of Face/Rib - Gold - NV - Momi Mining Co., Momi Mine

The shaft in the article is only 3 miles from that in the pictures above.
