Default High Idle after warm up on 81, KZ440

I brought this cycle back to life after it had been abandoned for a number of years. Overhauled amost everything (or so it felt). Mostly inspecting, cleaning and general tune up stuff...

It runs pretty well but recently it has been not slowing to "normal" idle speed once it is heated up. Figured that the most likely cause would be a throttle cable that was a bit too tight... not so. Idles well when warm enough to not require choke but after a couple miles I get stares from people at stop lights.

Seems like I read something about this on this forum but can't seem to locate it now that I need the info...

Any thoughts? Seems like it should be obvious, but is itn't to me.

Thanks in advance..

Hi Mulliganov and welcome to the forum. I'm not sure about your idle problem but you might find some helpful information and links in this website covering the care and feeding of the KZ400's and 440's.

Turn the idle down?
Adjust the valves?
Clean the pilot jets.

more than likely a vacumn leak. you can spray carb cleaner all around the carbs/boots/etc till you find the leak. it will more than likely idle HIGHER when you hit the spot thats leaking.

Default About the valves...

I'll check for the vaccum leak. Sounds like what I though I read...

About the valves. I haven't messed with them. I did a compression check as one of the first things. The pressure was in the mid range of the spec. I really haven't given them another thought...

Could the compression check be within spec and still there be a problem? I hadn't though so, but I am not sure...

thanks.

Another thing to check is the condition of the o-rings on the pilot mixture screws.
