Question 79 KZ650 Air Filter Problem

Hey guys and gals, I'm new here. I don't actually own the bike I'm asking about. But my cousin and I are restoring a couple bikes one is a 79 Kz650 and mine is a 94 Yamaha XV750 that was left laying on its side for about 9 years. Ok, Lets get down to business.

My cousins KZ air system was missing parts and after calling the dealership and getting a price on all stuff I was gonna need he decided to do go with K&N pods. I looked up the part number for his bike via K&N and ordered them through the local Advance Auto Parts. We get them home tear the old crap and go to slip on the pods. They DO NOT fit! WTF? I measured the filter ID and it was about 1.5" and the air port on the carb is about 2". Thats quite a difference. Anyone have this problem? Have a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pods are a pain on street bikes. If you do use them you'll need to re-jet your carbs. There are many motorcycle salvage yards for used parts and a lot can be found on ebay. I have an air box off a 77 that might be repairable.

This is just a guess but from what you posted you bought the correct size pods for a 79 650.......if it still has stock carbs. I'm thinking someone changed out the carbs for CV type carbs. If you can post up a pic of the carbs you have it would help.

That's just what I thought, you have BS34 carbs on there you will need to order 54mm filters. Those carbs look to be off a KZ1000 81 or newer.

I don't really know, but is it possible those carbs are off a 750-4?

No, the 750's used a stamped steel cap where the 1000's used a cast aluminium cap like what you see. I have both types here so it's easy for me to identify what they are from.

I had a hunch you were 100% correct, but asked for the obvious reason that the 650s & 750-4s are similar.

Okay. So, what did you put on your Ltd?

Any suggestions for an alternative to the VM24s on my 81 650-CSR?
BS32 carburetor opinions?

Thanks for the info Andy I found a set from K&N that fits these. Just gotta do a swap out when my cousin gets off work. The previous owner said he just had the carbs rebuilt, never mentioned them not being for this bike. lol. Well anyways thanks for the help i'm sure you havent heard the last of me! haha!
