Default 87 Ninja 1000/GPZ 1000 Exhaust

Hi to everyone. Great forum! It's been awhile since I had a Kawi. I just picked up pristine 87 Ninja 1000 with 28,000km (Canadian bike), one owner near mint condition. The only thing wrong with this bike is that the mufflers are rusted out at the bottom of each pipe. I want to get a full exhaust system. It seem that the Vance and Hines Supersport system is the only one thats still available for this bike. (I hope!) At any rate I was wondering if anyone has put one of these on an 86-87 Ninja 1000 before? Did you need to cut the fairing at all on the bottom or did it fit without trimming the fairing? I had a Ninja 900 before and I bought the same exhaust and I needed to do some trimming. I really hated to do it but a pipe was needed as well. Any help is really appreciated.

I cant speak for the V&H system, but an older Yoshimura full 4:1 requires a little trimming of the lower, and some heat wrapping the header at the oil cooler for mine. you will want the Muzzy aluminum fan to replace the plastic piece for certain. I plan to on mine soon.

I had a V&H on my first 1000R, but no fairings other than the upper and very tail, so I cant begin to say.

Yep, your going to need to trim the bottom fairing, where the collector and the muffler pipe meet, also you have to take off the muffler pipe at the collector when you change your oil too. hope this helps you.

Yup with my yoshi I have to do the same if I change the filter. stock ZG1000 headers should fit as well if you want to keep stock exhaust.

This helps out alot. I suspected that I would have to trim the lower fairing. I suppose it's ok to trim it. I just hate to trim a perfectly mint fairing What can I use to do a clean job? I suppose I should tape the area and use my dremel tool being careful not to melt the plastic. Also measure twice cut once....

Does anyone know what options there are in the way of full 4into1 pipes (or is the Vance and Hines the only option) And possibly just replacing the stock mufflers only? Any ideas

you can replace just the stock mufflers. there are pairs available on ebay, plus you might look for slipons that fit the stock headers. I'm running Kerker K system slipons right now on factory headers.

far as I'm aware the V&H crap is the only one available for the 1000R right now in a 4:1, but I dont like their systems because they have a tendancy to be quite loud.

to trim the lower, yeah, tape it, run your dremel slow and you can do it alrght. measure and mark where and how far you need to cut. I've used a hacksaw with a high tooth per inch count to do the job just as nicely without chipping or melting anything. just take your time and go slow, it can look quite clean.

I just got an 86 1000r. It's loud as hell. What kind of packing for the Vance and Hines Supersport Exhaust System, some stainless steel wool?

I bought a V&H header and pipe on ebay that I was told came off of a 1986 1000r but when I got them the center two pipes didnt line up with the exhaust ports. Anyone know where the part number is located on the header and what the right PN is supposed to be?
