Default 1977 KZ650 B1, Old bike! New Guy!

hope im posting these pictures right but here is a couple,

The "flames" are from the P.O. and yes they gotta go.

Its not running and this is were all you guys and gals come in and this is what ive done so far......

> Rebuilt Carbs
> New Oil/Air filter
> Cleaned and re coated gas tank
> Spark plugs, batttery, on the way from Z1
> tested compression 1- 155
2- 160
3- 155
4- 153
> Chk points and gaps

Now i was looking into the wiring of the recitifier it looks a little cooked (wiring) around it, ould it be a good idea to buy the combo Recitifier and regulator before i try to start it?
Anymore things i should chk before i think of trying to turn it over and hopefully on? Thanks in advance!! and im loving this Forum!!

I think you're on the right track! If you have spark, fuel, and compression your bike will run. So just track down which one of those is missing and you'll be fine. Good job so far.

Matt-

The flames are wicked cool.

I see you ordered a new battery. If you're trying to kick start it with a dead battery it ain't gonna happen.

very good question, it is my first bike and first KZ (howd ya know?) it has about 5000 miles on it which is good and a bad thing. I would say im mech inclined i know my ins and outs but i figure a motorcycle motor and maintanence is another world. Ive ridden quads and alittle of dirt bikes but this is my first street bike

Well you chose a great bike for your first. I had a 1978 KZ650 B2 and loved it. I have owned about 8 bikes trying to find something i might like better than my 650 and well i did find a bike a like better.... 1978 KZ1000.. lol she's got 57,000 miles on her and still going strong. As far as your bike goes... when you get your battery in or before it even comes do a look through on your wiring just to make sure there is no major damage that might cause a short. If there are no wires burned or rubbed through slap in the battery and give it try. start there and if its a no go then you can start digging. Good Luck!!

Clean the connections to the reg/rect. lube them with dielectric grease. empty the float bowls and fill with seafoam through the fuel line. Let it work while you wait for the battery and get it charged. Then try to get her running. You might want to check in at kz650 - Index

I alwasys check the valve clearance before I try and start one.... and install small in-line fuel filters.

Longer term I would:

Change the fork oil
change the brake fluid
grease the wheel bearings
new chain/sprockets (wait till you ride it a while to see if you want to change the gear ratio when you change the sprockets)
new tires

Thanks DrKayak!! I didnt think of that, like everybody says gotta start somewhere, sometime, I would like to do some body work and brake fluid change and fork seals etc etc etc.... but i wanna get this thing running before i go on and get my self deeper into the bike. (HOPEFULLY) she starts and and runs then i could start doing the other things like shocks, tires, updating the points to dyna and getting the chain ready for the road....... just gotta get it running!

IMO most old bikes were ridden with nothing more than oil changes, eventually the owner tires of it or something quits working and the bike was parked and forgotten. I have little doubt my 750 was abused then parked. I know I did not have a clue about checking the valves when I rode back in college.

Getting the valves right is key to getting the engine running as new and getting additional life from it. Fuel filters is the only way insure the carb is not a constant source of issues.

Good luck!

The electrical charging system for the '77s was different than the later years.
You would need to change the stator/generator and housing/engine case plus related parts to swap to a combined reg/rec.

There are ways to test & clean the rectifier (or is it the regulator, I've got a '78 so haven't done it). A service manual will show you how it's done.
One can be downloaded on the 650info site, link below.

Here is pic of it, it sits under the battery carriage, it might have still been working with the tape repair done by the previous owner, the regulator i figure sits on the side mount and that looks good as new (Just Dust) what do you think?

Should I buy a new recitifier from oregon motorcycle parts? I was hoping to avoid the whole adjusting the Volt reg and such, while riding in the future, Z1 does sell a replacment recitifier/regulator for the B1. here's the part # RI10-504 If you type in this part # it will pop it up in Z1, what do you think??
Thanks in advance!!

need some assistance, got this REC/REG combo for the B1 kz650 bought it at Z1, its to replace the REG and REC and put it into one, but the directions or "me" doesnt make sense, can this work with my bike or i need to rewire a bunch of things to make this work? ADD NOTE: it shows on Z1 website that this is combatitable on the B1/C1 KZ650::

Should i just buy a new recitifier? In the manual it shows that "if" needed the driver must adjust the voltage regulator every so often, so thats the reason I wanted to replace and uprade the two like " 2 birds with 1 stone" is that something to concern myself with?

Well, you can see the 3 yellow wires in the picture of your old regulator, so, just connect the new yellow wires to those. Then Red + and green - are easy and blue to key should be easy . That orange to "feild coil" is not somthing I know about.

I too would replace or at least rewire the old one. Often it's easier and less $$ to buy exact used replacement parts from the same bike you have on Ebay. What you got from Z1 is better and will last longer than some old E-bay part. It's just a little more advanced to install.

The 77 does have a field coil, later models don't.

What doesn't make sense about the directions and the diagram?
It's perfectly clear to me, so ask and I'll explain

In case you don't know.
Field coil is in the center of the stator on these bikes, and controls the output of the stator. The more voltage provided to the field, the higher the output voltage from the stator. At least until you let the magic smoke escape

Ignore anything about brushes in the directions, no brushes in this application.

DrKayak described it pretty well anyway
