Unhappy scratched vin and no title...goin to the dump eh?

Hi i am a young and fairly inexperienced motorcycle mechanic. Unfortunately as i have recently learned, being able to rebuild an engine or a carb is a piece of cake compared to trying to make a bike legal without the most proper of paperwork. In my case i rebuilt a 1975 kz400 and was real proud when i got the baby to purr and pull with power. Then when it came to legalizing it like my previous kz400 the first problem i had was that the bike had no title. But i figured in this case i could just apply for a salvage title or something. Thats when i found out that the friend i was fixing the bike for had no bill of sale. He bought the bike off ebay and since we were new to the procedure we didnt think to ask for a bill of sale. Somehow i still had hope for this pretty old bike thinking that i could just run a bike history with the vin. Then my dreams took their final blow when i saw that the frame vin had been scratched completely off. I AM SCREWED arent I. If anybody has some sort of suggestion as to what i should do with this tragedy of a vintage bike i would love to hear about it. I live in cambridge MA and here the laws are pretty strict. I was thinking about going back to new york where i bought it and trying to see if they'll let me slip cause the bike is 40 years old. I also figured that if i could look up the engine vin i might be able to figure the frame vin and thus get it checked for a stolen history.

SO IS IT GOING TO THE POLICE...THE DUMP...CAN IT BE SAVED....

Please lemme know any ideas or possible suggestions you have thanks.

Can you maybe find another duplicate at a scrap yard that has the necassary tags and vin. And just replace them. I know that it is questionable, but it would seem that if the bike were stolen, it was a long time ago and long forgotten. Callin ther police will likely not result in the bike being returned to an original owner.

For a bike this age, it is easy to obtain a title (in most states). There are several companies that specialize in this stuff. International Title is one. You fill ouot some forms, get them notarized, send them the $75.00 and wait a few weeks. What typically comes is a transferable registration from a state like Maine (where they do not have titles for bikes this old).

Basically the way it works is you 'sell' the company your bike, they register it and 'sell' the bike back to you.

Hey Jeff, just wondering how good these guys are. Have you used them before, or know of anyone who has used their servicese before? Im asking because I have an old (1949) ford truck I need to get a title for. I know its not motorcycle related but I figured I'd ask since you posted the links.

They seem to work fairly well. We've used ITS for 4 or 5 bike titles and only had one problem - they shipped our title to the wrong person - that took a few weeks to resolve.

Do NOT go through ITS titles without getting a hold of someone there first. The procedure and price has changed and ITS' website hasnt been changed. ITS gets a very bad rating from me because of it. Long story short, Isent out a money order, waited 6 weeks, called many times never got a call back, finally I got a hold of someone there, and he said that the procedure has changed and they were refunding peoples money as fast as they could. 2 weeks later I get my refund. I have a ranting post about them somewhere on here

Try these guys, Staab agency I have reason to believe that ITS titles actually works as a middleman to this company.
