Default New Engine for a 1982 440 LTD

Hi,

I just got my first bike, an 82 440LTD with a belt drive (I think these models are D-something?). It's got a seized motor and I'd like to buy a running replacement to put in the bike while I rebuild the original.

My question is whether engines from other years/models are interchangeable in 440s (i.e. a KZ440-A1, etc) - would anyone have any input on this? (Tips on where to look for a good used engine would be appreciated as well).

Thanks!

John

All KZ440 and KZ400 engines are direct bolt-in replacements. The earlier ones have a points ignition which you would have to replace with the electronic pickup from your old engine You would also have to use your old belt pulley if the replacement came from a chain model.

Those smaller bikes are dirt cheap in my area....try to buy a running bike, use yours for parts.

I bought one for $375 with 6K miles on it.....a carb cleaning and it ran like a top.

I cant imagine you can go the route your going and come out ahead....but then I dont know the story.

I seem to be hearing that more and more. I moved the bike from NJ where I bought it to Brooklyn so I hope not to have a big problem selling it for what I paid ($400). I sold an amp so if I can sell this bike I'll have $800 to spend on a running bike. I'll keep you updated.

I doubt you will get that kind of money out of it not running and in one piece. I sold my KZ440 after we were done using it as a learner in pieces. I sold 4 items off the bike and made all my money back and had $50 extra. I then used the rest of the bike as parts for one of my other bikes, a KZ440 hard tail bobber.

I tired to sell it running on Craigslist for $500, in A1 shape with 8K miles on it.......NO bites in 4 weeks.

In parts on eBay it went in 4 days.

Ive bought running street bikes for as little as $150.....

Maybe you have better luck then me.....

I'm hoping there are enough folks in Brooklyn that I can get someone to spare the money - it really is a great bike and I think is genuinely fixable, but it's a bigger project than I'm ready for right now. We'll see!
