Error, the 81 KZ1000 CSR was the J1. One of my best friends bought one of them about a week after I bought my K1.

1981 KZ1000M1 = CSR
1981 KZ1000K1 = LTD
1981 KZ1000J1 = Standard

All have J series motors.

Patman...to answer your question, your best source of used tanks is eBay. I believe that besides J1/2/3 tanks, KZ1100B1/2 tanks also physically fit, but you'll have to cap the pressure relief valve on the bottom of the tank and you may have to relocate the petcock (not sure about that).

Well it's a good thing I put "Error" at the start of my post. You are correct the J1 is the standard not the CSR.

oddly just 4 or 5 different tanks . now I'm confusticated .
are my p0lice tanks the same as the standard or the csr ?
We're just tryin to find the right tank for the guy

The tanks are slightly different. The P model (not C model) police tanks all seem to have a screw attachment at the rear of the tank...the J and B models have a 'bung' that is held down by a strap. This 'screw' arrangement most closely resembles the CSR and LTD, but the CSR has an extra hole in the bottom of the tank for the fuel level switch. However, the LTD tank only has two holes on the bottom...the fuel gauge and petcock, resembling the P bike tank...perhaps the P tanks interchange with the K model LTD bikes? I have actually never held a P model tank next to any of my bikes to get a sense if it is even possible to fabricate a fit.

Is it quite literally falling apart or are you just getting rust through on the bottom of the tank.

If it's just rust and some leaks you could take it to a radiator/fuel tank repair shop to have them see if they can clean it out, solder it up, and coat the inside. I did that on both a Yamaha SR500 tank with a leak and rust and a scooter tank with actual holes and obviously leaking. The SR cost $35 and the scooter was like $40. It's worth a try to at least be a stop-gap between now and finding another tank or even be the solution. Most won't guarantee they won't hurt the finish on the tank, but it's likely they won't affect it too badly if at all.

You could also contact Bill at the Big Open Road at 330-602-6736. They're an independent shop that has a couple of semi loads of 70s-80s Japanese bikes they're salvaging. The owner bought the stuff from a guy who was running a salvage yard, but quit. Owen, the owner, is big into old Kaws, having a built 900 drag bike he's had like forever.
