Crap. I thought that this quote from KZ400.com, along with other things, implied one would go the opposite direction: "Less conventionally it has a chain primary drive, which in effect means the engine runs "backwards...""

I hope I didn't screw anything up!

Just to update y'all, I bought a new engine that I'm picking up this weekend, so I'll let you know how that goes...!

That doesn't sound right to me. But trying to turn it backwards would not hurt it. You did not even get it to turn did you? I tried turning mine backwards and it would not. But turned over easy going forward. Not sure why that is.
Mine has a primary chain too.

I hope this works out for you.....but have you checked what a running bike would cost in your area.

Ive bought two of these in my area.....1 cost me $375 and needed carbs cleaned.....just cleaned....nothing else. Had 6K miles on it and flawless.

The other needed nothing and I gave $450 for it......around 10K miles.

These smaller bikes are cheap (atleast in my area but I certainly dont know prices everywhere). I cant imagine putting any money into one and coming out ahead in the end.
