Question 82 305 csr won't shift

the bike shifts to first and back to neutral just fine but not into 2nd and up, anyone have any ideas?

Is the bike running or are you trying to do this with the bike sitting still?

Alot of Kaw models do this, it's a safety thing I think.
Bike must be running and mooving to shift correctly.

it was running . I rode it back from the gas station about 1 &1/2 miles in first

OK how about some history leading up to this. Has is ever worked right since you've owned the bike, does it grind when you try to shift, has there been an recent work done to it, have you had a recent accident or dropped the bike etc etc.

did you check the gear box fluid? thats the first thing you should do or change the gear box fluid

we got it going not sure how but removed the clutch cover & clutch wiggled the shifting fork around and started working again, thanks for the help,

If the wrong weight fluid is used it can cause the clutch to slip and act like its in neutral any mess up other things

Just in case you missed it the first time robby12. These bikes don't have a gear box. The transmission and clutch are encased inside the crankcase with the rest of the bottom end of the engine. And using the wrong oil in one of these will cause the clutch to slip but it's far from being like it's in neutral. At least the ones I've personally seen with the wrong oil were. If there's one that will make it appear to be neutral I've yet to see it.
