Default Water pump on '87 ZX1000R (1000RX)

Hi Guys,

Love the info you can get on this forum.

I have a problem with my water pump on an '87 1000RX or ZX1000.

It had a small leak which looked like it was coming from the O ring in the metal water pipe from the water pump. So i bought a couple of 25mm O rings, the 35mm and the oval internal O ring for the pump. When i got closer I could see that the bolt which tightens the flange for the metal water pipe was missing so I simply found a similar bolt and tightened it up thinking this would solve my problem.

When I started filling the coolant back in , it just gushed from where I had tightened it. Now I'm guessing it is the o ring but I had difficulty pulling out that water pipe when i first tried.

What is the easiest way to replace the O ring? Do I need to pull out the whole pump? I just serviced the slave cylinder in the clutch so do I need to pull that off again too? I do have a manual but it is a little vague on how to do these small things.

thanks for your help
Wayne

PS hope i put this in the right forum

I've spent the last 2 hours fighting with that metal water pipe!

As I screw the bracket/tab on the pipe into the water pump it seems to distort the O ring and I dont think it will seal well or it will ride over the lip on the pipe.

Not to mention I've removed all the screws from the water pump and it refuses to come off the bike - I've even prayed to the great Green God Kawasaki to no avail.

Any suggestions folks?

cheers
Wayne

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - been away for a couple of days!

To help remove the water pump assembly - once the pipe is off etc, you can screw in 2 x 6mm bolts of 1mm thread pich and pull on these.
Hope that helps!

No worries - thanks mate I shall try that. Since I did this I 've been fighting with the starter motor/solenoid - now the mounting block for the starter motor is stripped - I love old bikes
