Also, cleanliness additives like deterrgents and dispersant are very necessay in sooty Deisels, but these additives make anti-wear agents like the ZnDDPs less effective.
Except that bikes do not produce the levels of soot that Diesels do, but they do shed clutch material.

But if Rotella is so bad, then how is it that it meets JASO-MA specifications... it is simply not rated JASO-MA because it's target market is HD truck service and it would be a waste for Shell to pay the licensing fee to have the JASO-MA label.

Well I can tell you this it runs a lot better with the spring and washer. I would suggest anyone who notices that there's is missing next time they change their oil invest in them and put them on.

Rotella-T is rated for motorcycles, and test results back it up in the real world.

Also it is considered to be the best oil to use for cam break-in in new engines with flat tappets (and breaking in new cams and flat tappets in old engines).

Default Shell Rotella

Shell Rotella is a great oil to use for flat tappet cam break-in because of its high zinc content. I used to do a lot of muscle car motors and wouldn't put a new cam in without. You are taking a gamble if you don't use it. Of course use the cam and lifter lubricant, bring new motor up to 1500-2000 rpm for about 20 minutes varying the throttle. Cams only get oil splash to the lobes. I figure would be the same for motorcycles also. Roller cams like my last motors(car) have no break-in problem(cam). You may or may not have this problem, but I personally wouldn't take the chance. I personally wouldn't pay the extra money for synthetic oils either regardless of a few horsepower gain. Just my two cents. I am a 50 year old mechanic and have been building engines for over 30 years. Haven't built any motorcycle engines other than doing the topends.

Guys. Good thread and thanks for the information. But a few questions remain. I'm out of date, but does I think JASO MA just looks at the friction properties of wet clutches, and with only one friction material. So limited testing and nothing to do with cams and tappets. If somebody has a connection with Shell Global solutions, ask them what engine is used to evaluate cam and tappet wear in the formal approval of Rotella T. Do we think that it is even a motorcycle engine, much less a Kwaker engine?
