Post More GPz 1100 carb conversion Qs?

Greetings All:

So based on the recommendations I found here I've pulled out my spare set of BS-34's to go on my '84 GPz 1100. I've also got new jets on the way - 140 mains, 40 pilots. Got some good advice on how to clean my old carbs up as well.

So...

Q1: Base settings for carbs? Any recommendation on needle position and air pilot screw turns? I have the original stock exhaust (until I talk the wife into giving me money for something better). I expect to be getting some K&N pod filters... just won't ride in the rain...

Q2: K&N's? If I measured the carb inlet's right, they are about 56 mm in diameter. Standard K&N's seem to have an opening of 54 mm? Did I get something wrong someplace? Or will the 54's on the K&N's fit the 56 of the carbs?

Q3: Why in the world did Kawasaki make it so difficult to get the motor starter out? Was having starter problems. Checked all circuits and all relays, switches, and wiring were ok. Pulled the starter (after much effort), opened it up and poured a large pile of fine black powder on the work bench. What a mess. I assume that is what was left of the brushes? Any one had an issue like that before with a bike of only 23,000 miles? I ordered a new starter just to be sure not to have to ever pull it out again...

Thanks for the help... Wish I had found this place before I started work on my GPz 750.

Later

With stock exhaust and pods you might find the 140/40 jets to be a little too large. Thats about what you would need with a 4-1 and pods though. When I was running a Kerker 4-1 (no baffle) and pods I ran a 140/42.5 and I had put one extra shim under the needles. I was running Uni pods so I can't tell you if the K&N's will stretch enough to fit the carbs or not but if you're sure it measures 56mm on the carbs (been a long time and I can't remember what they measure) I would try to find pods that were for a 56mm.

Not sure what kind of price you got on the new starter but you should be able to get a rebuild kit for it a lot cheaper and they aren't that difficult to rebuild if the armature is in good shape.
