Could be a number of things but I'd probably start with testing the coils, new plugs and wires and do the coil power rewire mod.

P.S. When is the last time the valves were checked/adjusted and the carbs synced?

Have you checked the input voltage to the ignition coils? Do this:

1. Fully charge the battery.

2. Remove the gas tank.

3. With the key turned on and the run/stop switch to run, get a mutimeter(analog or digital) and check the primary side(small wires) of the coils.

4. They should read battery voltage or a little less, if it's down around 8-10 volts your bike could benefit from doing a simple wiring bypass using a 12 volt automobile relay.

5. Read up on it at wiredgeorge motorcycle carburetors - Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Carburetor Sales, Rebuilding and Restoration - Home.

6. New sparkplug wires and sparkplug caps can also improve the spark energy.

+1,

This is a common mis-fire culprit. What i've done in the past is pull, the fuel tank, and run the bike at night, in pitch black and you might be able to see spark jump from a bad wire.... crude but sometimes effective !

Sometimes the simple things are what causes the most head scratching!
