Default 83 GPz750 Jumping out of second gear

Has anyone experienced the transmission jumping out of second gear into neutral on a GPz750?

All the gears shift great, but every once in a while, normally under engine breaking, second just jumps to neutral.

Any ideas what's the cause or the fix?

My '82 does this as well but only under hard engine decelleration. If I romp on it in second and then back off quick, she will jump back into neutral. Kind of a pain...Not sure what the cause is or the fix. My bike has 42K on it. May have had a rough childhood!

Sounds like the edges of the shift dogs may be rounded.
I have a 550 transmission handy so I'll try to take a pic to illustrate later tonight.

Engine out , case split , replace at least two gears . Steell or I can point you at the parts diagram or in his case actual photos . This is common for a transmission that has been abused .

and also be happy you are not on a yamaha from the 80's, they are known for completely loosing 2nd gear. I always found it funny that yamaha would never admit to that problem, and so many of their bikes from the 80's had that problem.

Fix it . So bad you have to fix it results in bent shift forks , mangled shift mechanism and the possibility of bits of hardened steel gear teeth attempting to find their way at minimum through the gear clusters and at worst toward daylight .

refer to the manual and or a competent parts/service person for the correct parts . You may think that it is mainshaft and countershaft 2nd gear but that is not the case . Mahap Steell could enlighten you as I've run out of time ..
