Default 82 GPz 1100 engine questions

Been lurking about and signed up today, great site BTW

Started a new project, recieved it boxes! . Upside it looks very clean and everythng accounted for.

The topend is off and have the parts out getting checked if they are within spec.

If I need fresh slugs what do you recommend? The amount of oil on the top of the pistions I suspect it was burning it. It would be nice if all I needed was rings and a valve job and seals.

As a backup anyone have a top end? or motor to swap in?

Thanks in advance,

I just finished my 82 gpz1100. I put some wiesco 1200-something CC kit in it, I think it was 12.5 to 1 comp, which I now regret, if I had to do it again, I would of went with stock pistons of just checked pistons and ring clearance and possible re-ringed the original pistons. some things I would do is new valve guide seals, possible new guides on at least the EX side. other then that, the bottom end is solid.

First look all I was finding was wiesco too. Curious on why the regret.. Price? Perfomance? Comp diff?

My initial thought was to just add rings and a deglaze with my measurements, but deffer the machine shop measurements.

This is the first Kawi I've done in a long time ex kz900. Agree with you on the top end. If guides measure I'll leave them add seals and put new faces on the valves and seats. Usually lap the surfaces too. Very possible the oil was coming from up top, just not enough history with the motor.
I'll know more when I pick up the parts later today.

thanks guys..

If the jugs are good, hone them and add new rings to the "cleaned" stock pistons and once the head is checked good (cleaning, lapping valves w/new seals, etc.) put her back together with minimal expense. You have to ask yourself why the engine was dismantled in the first place, was something wrong, have I missed something? That bike makes very impressive power without going "big bore". PS. "good" means within specs!

Spoke with the shop this moring . Going to proceed get the head done, rings and a deglaze.
Was orginally taken apart because of an oil leak and sat for years.

I'll get some pics and start getting the rest of it together while the motor stuff is going on and parts get ordered.
Should be a runner and overall in very good condition.

Right on! You can always opt for the "Big Bore" route latter on! Good Luck! And do keep us updated!

And take it apart twice, and waste $250 worth of gaskets?
