Default 84 zn700a clutch question

i'm working on a 84 zn700a. the owner says it feels like the clutch is slipping. i got new friction discs and pulled it apart to install them. i noticed something that felt weird though... if i grab the outer basket i can rotate it back and forth about a 1/2". the shaft -does not- turn with it. is this normal on this model? i can't say of any other clutch i have done i had movement like this.

You've probably just never noticed it before

Outer hub/basket is not attached to the inner shaft, the inner hub is. Outer basket is driven by a gear that is in turn driven by a shaft that is driven by a chain that is driven by the gear on the crankshaft. Lot's of room for 1/2" play to develop.

thanks for the reply.

i see the gear behind the basket. that gear actually stays still when the basket is moved the 1/2" also... it almost feels like how most chain drive rear wheels have the cush pads in them to absorb some torque, but the basket will stay where it is moved, like no spring back.

from the picture i see the pads in the primary chain but that's not where i'm seeing movement. if the basket is held in place can the gear behind it be moved? i was going to take the whole thing off to inspect the back but the dang hub nut is on so good my impact gun didn't even get it loose...

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the transmissions on these but I thought the inner shaft was driven by the crankshaft and the outer basket drove the transmission. And the only time the inner shaft and basket turned together was when the clutch plates were installed and the clutch was engaged.

the basket is moving...nothing else is. right, hub and shaft is not the issue. it is the basket and the gear that is behind it is where the question is.

That would seem to be a lot of movement if it's in the transmission gears but have you checked to see if the drive sprocket it moving when you rotate the hub while it's in gear?

Look at the pic from kawasaki.com that I posted above, it clearly shows the gear driving the basket. It would be a bit more difficult to have the crank drive the inner hub (a lot more difficult actually).

As far as the basket moving goes, they (at least the 750's anyway) do have some sort of dampener in there, rubber in the 750 turbo baskets, but I forget what's in the regular 750 baskets. If I have one handy I'll look.

Edit:

Just had a look and I'd say there is rubber dampeners in the regular 750 baskets also. It looks just like the inside of the Turbo basket except the rubber is completely gone.
That's where your 1/2" play is coming from, those slots are about 1/2" long.

What is "clearly" shown to some is muddy water to others. Did I mention that I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to transmissions.

Ah, I see.

Being extremely familiar with both parts and service manuals I just sort of take it for granted that everyone else sees them like I do. The same thing applies to electrical diagrams, I never could figure out why people have trouble following one. I'll try to remember that what's plain to me may not be so for others.
