Just purchased this bike & it's becoming a money pit. Needs carbs & am wondering if 26mm carbs from '76 KZ900 will work.
Thanks

They should, but they wont flow the volume the 28s do.

Thank you! The bike runs rich with the current carbs & fouls plugs quickly.
My shop tells me they've been altered (needle jets) & has no idea what to do.

Does your bike have any mods like exhaust/intake or engine? Have you checked to see if your current carbs have the correct jets?

I'd also suggest changing the sparkplug caps,(they unscrew from the sparkplug wires) and the sparkplug wires. Most car speed shops sell 7MM sparkplug wires by the foot, others may have kits.

If the plug wires are sealed to the coils,I'd use this: Z1 Enterprises, Inc. - Product Catalog to add new plug wires to old ones.

Another place to look if you think it's carb problems would be the input votage to the ignition coils. Low voltage will result in black carbon fouled plugs having you tear down and play with jet sizes.

The website wiredgeorge motorcycle carburetors - Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Carburetor Sales, Rebuilding and Restoration - Home shows a simple wiring modification that bypasses the aged wiring in these older bikes. To see if your bike could benefit from this, do this:

1.Fully charge the battery.

2.Remove the gas tank.

3.With ignition switch in the on position and the run/stop switch in run.

4.Use a mutimeter(Digital or Analog) check the primary side(small wires) of the ignition coils.

5. If it's down around 7-10 volts, your bike is suffering voltage/current drop affecting the spark energy.

You should be able to get the proper jetting for that setup with the original carbs. It takes some work and trial n error testing but thats going to be the case no matter what carbs you go with.

Your bike, if stock, has 26's on it already. 1977/78 KZ1000's had 26 Mikuni's and they went to 28's in 1979. The 26's from a 1976 KZ900 should be fine.
