Default Decoding the Vin

Is there a web resourse where I can find out what the vin numbers mean. A friend recnetly gave me a Kawasaki KZ750E that he had bought as a restoration project but ran out of steam. And that is honestly all I know about the bike. I guess the main thing I want to know is the year and I am assumeing the vin can tell me that. Any info you can give me would be greatly appriciated.

KZ750E006xxx

Someone did a custom paintob on this bike and removed all the markings on the side of the tank and the side covers. It is only identifyable from the dataplate under the handlebars. In addition to the VIN on that plate there is also the numbers 80 3 printed like that.

It's not a bad looking bike I'm looking forward to breathing some life into it again.

Built March 1980, it's a KZ750-E1 - the engine number should start KZ750EE-xxxxxx

Thanks that should help me out.

I'm looking forward to this project. The guy I got if from rebuilt it from the ground up but couldn't find a replacement ignitor and it has sat in his garage for a few years so it has kinda regressed. For instance when I drained the gas tank last night the gas was orange, and the battery has gone dry. So it has some work to be done. That and finding a new ignitor should be fun.

Thanks again for the help.

Unless you want to stick with factory parts, there are cheaper options to fix the ignitor (Kawasaki price for a new one is approx $400). The Dynatek Dyna-S ignition is a replacement unit that goes behind the RH engine cover and replaces the ignition pickups and the CDI Ignitor as a single unit.

Here's a link to the unit
