    Default 1980 kz1000 b4 ltd

    Hi,

I am new to motorcycling...I bought this 1980 bike from a friend without knowing anything about bikes. It was running great, but the guy moved away and got married, so the bike was stored for 2 years. I took it to a mechanic and he id'd the bike and said it was too big and powerful for me (female 5'2")plus it is my first bike, he can get it cleaned up and running for $400-$600. But he has a 1996 vulcan 500 for $1800 that he says would be great...he is willing to work something out with me regarding letting go of the 1980. I have searched the net and can not find any price quotes on my bike to make any kind of deals. Can someone help me...what do you all think?

I just want to ride and have a bike that is safe. I will be taking the cycle course soon, but i need a bike. (if the 1980 is too big, then i don't need it but i don't want to get ripped off either). Please help.

Go over to www.kzrider.com There are many people out there who would be willing to give you an honest quote on what you can expect to sell your 1000 for. More details and pics of the bike will be needed but you will get good fair info there. Your not in Milwaukee are you? Im halfway thinking of going to a bigger bike.

That model sounds familiar The price really depends on the condition of the bike and how close to original it is. Some people love these bikes and are willing to pay top dollar for them while others just dont care for it. Personally, I'd keep it, I love mine, but you know your limitations better then anyone else.

    Yeah,

I've thought of just keeping it and after I get going, months or years of riding, well then I might be able to set up this bike and ride it myself...I can't reach the floor very well though ( tip toes) so I am not sure this is practical, but i guess i could get it lowered? Thanks for the heads up.
-- The bike is in its original condition, only minor paint damage, everything else is pretty clean ** there is a pix on bikerpics website (i couldnt get a pic on here)

    Hey,

If there is a "start" button on the right (handle bar), then why is there a "kick Starter" (the stick on the left that folds in and out of the side - I guess its a kick starter - i have no idea)? Is there 2 ways of starting these bikes up?

Yep, two ways to crank your bike. 1980 was the last year KAWASAKI had both.

Battery technology in the '70s was nowhere as good as now and electric starters were largely deemed unreliable at best. I'm not sure if it was a DOT regulation that caused kick starters to dissapear around the '80/'81 model years or the Big Four just decided that they were no longer needed on street bikes. I do recall Cycle World decrying the lack of kickers those years, however, they accepted the situation like the rest of us.

I glad to have a kicker on mine as it saves wear and tear on the electric starter motor on cold starts plus the battery may have sat for a few weeks and will not be able to provide as hot of a spark while cranking a cold engine. Those old starter motors aren't too durable either.

You'll be glad the kicker is there.

You are asking questions about something that was posted almost 2 years ago and she only has 16 total post so I doubt you get an answer from her.
