I have a 1981 KZ440 and was wondering how much was involved with putting in a kick start if its pos. It starts with the elec start but its weak. Hope someone can help. Thanks

I think it can be done, but it's not an easy, bolt-on kind of job. You'd need parts from a kz400. Replacing the starter clutch [if that's the trouble] is much simpler. IIRC, you'd only have to pull the left cover off, and it's right there, no case splitting involved.
Thats cool. The thing is my parts bike is a 1979 KZ400 with a perfectly good kick starter. I already got the carb to fit (not the easiest thing to do). So I figure have her donate her kick start. I got a guy thats good with a wrench that will probably do most of the work(what are friends for right). So the 400 should fit the 440? Think it will have to be modified much?
Bump. I hate hate HATE batteries and electric starters and I want to do this conversion as well. Old thread but any updates from folks who have done this conversion?

Awesome, thanks for the link. Looks like there are some candidate conversion parts on eBay right now. I'm pretty handy and fearless with tools so I look forward to doing this conversion. very old school to have kickstart only and no heavy battery hanging out. Anyway, getting my hands dirty is honestly half of the fun!
How do you plan on getting rid of the battery?
Battery eliminator/capacitor or some kind of stator/alternator + voltage regulator arrangement. I'll have to read more on it. I might not have lights at a stop but then again I don't plan on stopping very often!![]()
Read here. This guy has the stuff for sale.

I have a parts bike for a kz 440 belt 1981. Im interested in converting to kick start aswell. I see that the link you mentioned of your project was removed. Could you possibly repost it? And the link for the battery removal parhaps? Im still in the plotting phase of this project but would like to start the research to see what would need to be done. Thanks
I second that. Anyone have a link?
