What makes you think you need a new timing Chain?
How many miles you got on the engine?

The Sticky up top has KZ/Z parts sources.

You might just need your tensioner adjusted.

it clicks a bit at idle up to about 1700 rpms and a buddy of mine who knows a bit about them says he is about 90% sure its the timing chain. While were on the subject is there any common problem with the light behind the spedometer or tach. Mine goes out then works then goes out....just started tonight and im going to go have a look at how i might take it apart for a peek at the wires.

The '77 kz650 has a manual cam chain adjuster that needs adjustment approx every 3100 miles (5000 km). If you've never adjusted yours, that would be my first thing to do.

I've heard of 650 getting 100 000 miles + and not needing a new cam chain.
