Looks like VM29's to me. That orange sealer is because the drain plug o-rings are shot. I recently went though some VM29's and assembled an O-ring kit by purchasing in bulk from McMaster-Carr. Have tons of spares so contact me if you need any. http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...e-o-rings.html
.
Actually the previous owner glued some plastic plugs in with some red goop. I sent you a message regarding the O rings etc. Thank you...Russ
hey man do you have any idea where to get the cover for the air filter for a 1982 kawaski kz 440 ltd belt drive? or how to make one? Im afraid this is messing with the bike making it run to lean.
Here is a list of what ur looking for, all in the search. But as a fellow 440 owner I got it for you. Good luck

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
Metalesp, you'r correct. There are a lot of us KZ owners out here. Here in Wisconsin, mine's put up 'till spring. Thirtyinches of snow not good for Sunday riding.
My steed is one of the "touring' packaged" ones of 1978. Not many of these still equipped as most owners removed those related items for a more naked bike look, or the items got damaged in spills.
Many more years of happy riding to you all and a safe 2009 to everyone.

Heya Russ....nice bike you found there. Definitely keep the smoothbores. As for the wheels, they look to me like teh Morris wheels that were an aftermarket alternative for our bikes back then. I'd keep them on it for sure. If you want better braking there are/were dual frt disc kits available for our bikes, of which mine is equiped.

Well three weeks later and a couple hundred dollars in parts and it runs great. I cant say enough about the poeple at Z1 enterprizes. They are really professionals. Changed the coils, replaced some parts, gaskets and O-rings in the carbs. And cleaned them out. The best product I found for cleaning the carbs out was Berkbile instant Gum Cutter in a spray can. It took off old gas varnish immediately. Amazing product.
Question for the pros out there:
It has a miss at about 4000 rpm that works itself out at 5000. I am also using individual air filters on each carb as opposed to a box. With the adjuster on the carbs backed all the way out it idles at 1400 and will not go lower. Any ideas as to the miss? The miss only takes place when riding...Russ
Once again thanks to all of you on ths site for the help.
I'll tell you what Russ, I don't know what you had to give for your bike but it's a gold mine in "period correct" goodies. Those are Lester mags and they are pretty sought after. Those smoothbores fetch huge money when they come up for sale on ebay as do the Kerker headers. I doubt you can get hurt on that bike money wise.

I have almost nothing in the bike. Less than $600 so far including the bike. I have an office up in Streetsboro Ohio so I get up there all the time. In the spring I will drive it up and maybe we can meet for lunch.
OKC I think you are right about the slides being up too far. That would account for the high reving when the choke is applied.
Does a low Z1F number have anything to do with value?

i recently bought 79 kz750, heres a link to a video i made of it:
YouTube - My New 1979 KZ750 B4
Update on progress:
Put a quick coat of paint on the spare tank, covers and tail. Then cleaned it up a little. Got the carbs syncrinized and it is running very well. Been too cold to really go for a long ride since I got it running right. Today is -10 degrees maybe next Tuesday when it hits +33. Here is a couple of pics. Thanks again all...Russ
Haven't decided on a seat yet.

Russ, the bike is looking very good.
Two questions: do the carbs tilt down a bit? ...and are those Lesters?
